So let’s discuss things. Let’s say you’ll magically end up in the UK (Wales) next Spring. You’ll stay for a week. You’ve got a few mechanically inclined connections there. Would you get a rental or an old banger for the price of a decent rental? And what kind?

This is relevant due to the multi-day Oppomeet in late March in Wales...

I’d get a banger and I’d get the tiniest car I could get.

It’s up to 5 days. So everywhere, but we’ll certainly be driving in the Snowdonia and Brecon Beakens national parks. And maybe visit some towns too. And a track day and race some karts.

I really like the concept of a visitor buying a cheap car to hoon around, but I thought this was discussed previously, and that it was said that a non-resident would have difficulty (if not impossibility) buying and registering a car in the UK when there on a visit.

Anyone know about this?

Nothing too crazy. Adapting to driving on the other side of the road will be hard enough.

Actually, one of our UK members found out it is in fact possible. You’ll need to tax it (1 month minimum; 2 digit amount) and insurance is possible too. I’m not entirely familiar with the details yet.

He knows more:

For a 5 day trip the registration wouldn’t even have time to be processed, and as long as the vehicle is taxed by the PO then you can ask them to leave it taxed for the duration of the trip (this costs them nothing). That said, you would still need insurance, and there are a couple of temp cover issuers who will insure foreign driver with a valid passport for up to seven days.

That’s all nice and well, but how do we keep the local sheep from stealing and joyriding our cars? What’s the nicest banger good for if it ends up upside down in some field the next morning, next to some sheep who pretend to know nothing?

If we use sheep skin seat covers, will they work as scarecrows or will they instead attract horny sheep?

Maybe we can scare them off by wearing wellingtons and wooly jumpers. Twingotamer seems to know a thing or two about wooly jumpers.

I’d be inclined to buy if you were sure the situation with the insurance/tax/v5 (especially insurance) was absolutely bullet-proof.
But it’s one of those things where there’s a huge grey area where they’ll screw you if they think they can.
