Kinja'd!!!

I honestly couldnt believe it. Especially with the offerings that have come out recently. Really though? Over the Continental? What are your thoughts on this? Is it deserving? Personally I think with the quality problems its had, niche boutique like dealer network and still kind of pie in the sky hope of even still being in the US through the next decade, I think its a weird move. And in an of course move, the CR-V is SUV of the year and the F-150 is Truck of the year.

A year is a long time. Maybe “Car of the Week” for an Alfa.

More like Car of the Moment. And in any event, the award is for the Quadrifoglio anyway.

Sometimes they get it right. But then they do shit like this and it makes you question their automotive integrity and all the extensive testing they do.

Edward,

Please re-send me your bank account details. I need them to deposit the massive bribe for the COTY award.

You know MT is screwed up when it hands out a 2018 COTY award. It’s only 2017, MT!

Well hey, this is the 20th anniversary of the time they picked the 1997 Chevy Malibu .

I don’t know about reliability or performance, but I almost always like the looks of the Alfa and Lancia cars that I’ve seen over the years.

All jokes aside you have a point. I see this as a sale booster for a model that hasnt lit anything on fire.

I totally forgot about that. They’ve had many questionable choices, especially the last what, 20 years.

They actually had many worse choices back when they had separate Car of the Year and Import Car of the Year awards. There was often not a viable option of an interesting new American car so they picked something, and that’s how you got picks like the Malibu. The 1997 Import Car of the Year was the E39 BMW 5-series.

1999 was the last year for Import Car of the Year. Since then, their choices have been somewhat less crazy.

Only brand new or heavily facelifted cars are eligible for Car of the Year, so that limits the pool of options significantly. The Continental wasnt eligible, because it came out for 2017 and is now in its second model year.

Sadly its still just a fancy Ford.

... but harsher impacts reveal vibrations and judders that indicate this MKZ-based platform has been stretched to its limits.

Good interior, but auto journos love a good platform.

Because it’s a good-looking, great-driving RWD sporty luxury car.

It’s got old-school Alfa charm but still has modern amenities, getting some of the best crash test results of any car on the market. Enough has been said about the Quadrifioglio, and its Ferrari-derived engine too.

I suppose you could make a better counter-argument solely concerning your side of the pond - because of the patchy dealer network and lack of manual transmission cars in the States. Though purely from the perspective of this being a ‘good car’ or not, I would say it fills a gap in the industry - or at least finally gives us a credible BMW alternative when it comes to enthusiast-oriented luxury cars.

I won’t deny there are downsides, but when these cars depreciate, I’ll certainly have my eye out for these. It’s easily one of the boldest recent moves in the car industry, and all the better for it.

Oh yea Ill definitely be on the lookout for used ones. Its just here in the US the Alfa launch hasnt gone well. Bad press cars, bad consumer cars, a not quite there yet dealer network etc all combine to make their US rebirth not look so good. Ive read that in any trim that are a credible sports sedan. The problem is I dont think enough people will notice or care to take notice.

Still, at least the brand has an established identity unlike some rivals.

But there you go, a(nother) rough start in the US for Alfa (again), it might not last very long - but enjoy it while you can.

Also, it seems the American motoring press are no stranger to rooting for the underdog. See MotorWeek’s ‘Best Imported 4-door Sedan’ in 1989.

Kinja'd!!! "LJ909" (lj909)
11/28/2017 at 17:27, STARS: 1

Yea Motorweek did root for the underdog many times though they had actual reasons behind it that made sense.

I hope Alfa does good but its not looking good so far for them in the US. Combine all the other problems with them have pretty much no brand awareness outside of people old enough to remember when they were here the first time. That makes it worse. I still have seen any sort of proper advertising from them (TV).

Chevy had some questionable model names during the late 80's-early to mid 90's. Its just as bad as Celebrity,Corsica and Beretta.
