For some reason this made me think of the Live Artur Rubinstein recording of him absolutely botching the final chord on some Chopin piece. Can’t find the recording or remember exactly what piece it was. Makes me feel a little better about my piano skills.

As a professional musician, I can assure you that I have made my own share of clams in performance. It’s part of being human.

A few years ago, the University of Texas orchestra did a gala performance of Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1. It was a very big concert, lots of big donors, some super famous pianist (I wasn’t on this gig, fortunately). Lynn Harrell, perhaps better known for his cello playing than his conducting, was on the podium. The hall darkens, his arms go up, the horns prepare to make their bold opening statement, and Harrell starts conducting in 4. Half of the horns came in on 2, the other half came in on 3, and it was almost a complete train wreck. So yeah, it happens to all of us.

Ooh. Yeah, that is bad. That is a piece you can’t just play it off on either. Even the lay people will know you dun goofed.

It goes both ways, though. We recently did a production of Carmen, and in the Aragonaise the oboe player came in a bar early. The rest of the orchestra realized what happened and skipped a bar. It was flawless, and nobody was any wiser.
