So I want to find a stainless band for this thing. I like the watch, it looks good, and feels right on my wrist. However, despite my daily wipe-down, weekly cleanings, and regular conditioning, the leather of This strap is rapidly deteriorating. I just sweat a lot and have a naturally oily skin.

Should I just go to a store or does anyone know more about this case for a suggestion? The leather band says 22 so I imagine it means

It’s a Fossil Pilot 54 Automatic and I wear it nearly every day.

A watchmaker who runs an independent repair shop (yes, they do exist) would likely be able to give you a better opinion about changing from leather bands to a steel bracelet.

I had a very similar issue with my leather band watches, so now I wear a quartz watch with a steel case and bracelet with a few gold accents.

Seconding KusabiSensei on the repair shop advice, but adding: if you’re used to the leather strap, going to a stainless might not be super comfortable. Have you thought about a NATO-style strap? I think you could find a great-looking color combo for that case/face.

Most watches that come with metal bracelets have these little finisher panels that fill in the gap between the strap lugs on the case, like such:

But if you buy some random bracelet that’s not originally designed for your watch, you’ll have a gap in there.

Personally I think the way to deal with the lack of finisher panel is to get a mesh bracelet. Some watches that come with mesh bracelets have a gap between the lugs:

IMHO that doesn’t look as good as this style that integrates the mesh directly to the case...

But to me the mesh bracelet works better with that gap between the lugs than a link bracelet.

I quit buying watches with leather straps for the same reasons. I have yet to find an acceptable replacement. Please let us know what you come up with so we can follow in your footsteps!

I’ve got a neoprene strap on my Seamaster and it has the look of leather, but stays cleaner (and is easier to clean if it gets dirty). Plus I find it to be much more comfortable than a bracelet band and I rarely wear my Navitimer anymore for that reason. Here’s what it looks like, I’m sure you could find something similar:

I love the leather band on my Moto 360. Never have a cleaning issue. In fact I usually just wash it in the sink when I wash my hands sometimes... It is an integrated strap though so I have no issue with gap.

I have a custom designed bronze watch from Chicago that has a neoprene strap on it. I’ve had it for 7 years. Cleaning the strap is easy and it is sturdy.

Stainless links rip my arm hair out. I don’t wear my watch anymore. I used to wear a suunto in the military, it was rubber.
