yeah cause you’ll be putting in thousands every year in maintenance.

used BMWs and benzes depreciate very quickly for a reason. They’re a far cry from the ones even 20 years ago in terms of longevity and they’ll cost a lot to maintain. The engines and transmissions are usually durable but the rest of the stuff, especially electronics, will cost you a lot down the line.

The saying “There is nothing more expensive than a used European luxury car” exists for a reason.

Yeah, its almost 7 years old.

I think that perhaps a used chevy SS would be a similar car for the usages by a car person, but SS’ are still expensive online.

I’m going to go ahead and guess that has got the same engine as the X5 that had a “recall” that was essentially a top end rebuild and turbo replacement (10-12k). My father one (X5) luckily still under warranty, but he had nothing but trouble with it after that 3 week service, he ditched it.

The 7-year-old 550 that I had (2007, bought in 2013) was the worst pile of shit I’ve ever owned. In the year and a half I had it, it cost way more than the initial purchase price. Thankfully the warranty I’d bought paid most of it.

It’s not surprising. It’s 6 years old with 120k miles. Depreciation sucks and when it gets over 100k it gets worse.

The ad is a bit shouty, which raises suspicion. The black roof being “tasteful” is also suspect.

If I want a TT V8, I’d go for a 2012+ E550 - seems to hold value better, probably not as troublesome, no manual (but I am not in that cult anyway).

High miles, the N63 motor especially the earlier versions is notoriously unreliable, and BMW resale values in general have been hurt in the past 18 months by Takata airbags.

I didn’t know they had Takata airbags also. Good to know.

My 2011 BMW 335xi had its Takata airbag replaced recently. But that of course requires BMW to first notify the owner that their VIN has finally been selected for a replacement, and the owner to go and have the recall performed.

A shame they’re so unreliable, this was the last manual 5-series we got in the U.S. IIRC and I always liked the F10's styling better than the overBangled E60.

The saying “There is nothing more expensive than a [cheap] used European luxury car” exists for a reason.

There are plenty of good used european cars out there, but a cheap example of even the best models will be painstakingly expensive.

Another one of these popped up on Oppo recently for something like $15k. This model (engine) in particular is known for catastrophically expensive failures.

You’d be better off spending the money on the nicest E39 540i/6 you could find. The fact that good E39's (nevermind the M5) are still selling in the high 4-digit or even 5-digit price range tells you something about that model’s relative longevity.

That does seem unusually cheap, but the asking price is an indicator that the owner doesn’t value it a whole lot. It’s a modern BMW V8 5 series for 14k, run.

My BMW mechanic daily drives one of these now. He got it cheap because they tend to be needy but if you can DIY (or you, like, own a BMW shop) they are fairly good deals. I haven’t heard anything bad about the auto in these so I don’t think you are saving yourself much trouble getting a 6MT, although certainly upping the fun factor.

Remember it was an expensive luxury car from BMW when new, and budget for maintenance accordingly. Also realize that these have been in the used market long enough that they have generally passed through some hands that didn’t do the foregoing, and therefore there is likely to be some catch-up maintenance. If all of that seems ok, then it might be a good option.
