Finally upgraded my home audio receiver! I’m pumped my old receiver is a piece of junk and this new one will be awesome. Up next speakers!!! Here’s what I bought . I feel like its a good deal at $250. Did you guys cyber Monday anything good? This will be a huge upgrade and lately my old unit overheats while watching movies so it has to go asap. Another Yamaha after the jump.

What receiver did you have before? I have a Denon from 2010 that I want to replace when I upgrade to 4K.

Ouch my kids finally gave up on asking for any legos over $100. I just cant do it no matter how cool. They have at least 2k in legos. I’ve cut it off since they now lay in shambles. Sometimes we rebuild something but it takes a week just to find the correct pieces since there is so much to dig through.

When I was a kid, I longed for the time when I’d be older and could buy all the lego sets I wanted. Now I’m older and STILL can’t afford them!

That receiver looks a lot like one I got 8 years ago as an open box at best buy. It’s been great, and we’re still happy with it. It took some time to get setup just the way we wanted, but well worth it.

Sure its somewhat similar but this ones only about a year old so should have a bunch of new bells and whistles over 8 years ago. Looking forward to modernizing with wifi/bluetooth. Plus this thing runs wireless speakers and I need that to have rear channels with out doing major construction to run wires due to the way my house is built.

Years ago, like 40 something years ago, after my father suddenly passed away, a well-meaning relative sent some money to my mother to take me and my sister to the toy store and get anything we wanted, cost no object. Now I was the biggest Lego fan on the planet, but I just couldn’t do it. I didn’t get a single Lego set - not one - even though I could have had all of them if I wanted.

I do see all sorts of kits, and am especially enamored with the architectural series, but now, like then, the price puts me off. I do pick up whatever pieces I can find at the Goodwill Outlet since I’m paying by the pound. I haven’t actually built anything, but have used them as trading material; a couple of years ago I traded a box full for an older MacBook (with SSD, no less).

Oh yeah, I meant to add the caveat, “... except yours will have 1,000,000 features mine doesn’t, for the same price I paid back then”

Basically I think they make good stuff and I think you’ll like it!

Cheers

I didn’t do the Cyber Monday thing, having purchased a new iPad last Friday. I am about to drop a small bundle on some software on Steam, but I don’t know if that counts since the sale started last week...

I agree that they are hard to figure out. I had a borrowed Yamaha a while back and couldn’t figure the damn thing out so I’m a bit nervous but I’ll take the time to figure this one out.

Years ago I picked up a very nice Yamaha receiver at Goodwill, but it had occasional issues. I should have known that if something that new shows up that cheap at Goodwill there has to be something seriously wrong with it.

What I didn’t notice, and the cause of all the problems, was something that the previous owner did. Eventually it died, and the repair shop clued me in on the problem. I am assuming that, in order to fit into a particular cabinet, the PO removed the feet on the bottom of the unit. This led to a lack of airflow and its inevitable death due to overheating. Oops...

I still have the case of that receiver sitting on a shelf, thinking that I might use it to make a HTPC someday if I can take the time to figure out how to interface the controls on the front to a PC using something like a Raspberry Pi.

I Black Friday’d a Fire Stick on Thursday (yes, I lagged a bit, didn’t have one when even my mom has one) for $25. This evening I watched Malcolm in the Middle on ProSieben, dubbed in German. What an age we live in.

20 years ago if you told some one to stick their fire stick in your HDMI port you’d get a stern slap:)

It’s probably a fine HT receiver for movies, so it really doesn’t mater what speakers you pick. Music is a whole different discussion- an audiophile

Agree it’ll work for now but I need to get some proper satellites and center. The ones I have now were cheap 20 years ago when I got them so they function but are basically garbage. They have a hard time with the voices being clear because they are to big. Sort of muffled sounding.

Nice! You’ll need to post up a review after you’ve had it for awhile. I need a new one as well - mine works fine (Pioneer) but is wayyyy outdated.

We grabbed something late last night on Best Buy’s website - new TV.

speakers and acoustics matter most...this is fine for music and movies.

Fortunately, these days you can look up a manual online for anything. So in 2 years when you forget how to change some obscure setting, like the relative level of the left-rear speaker individually, you can just look it up online.

Now you have me wanting a new receiver. Can’t justify... but wow

I bought the same receiver this summer. Fantastic receiver. Make sure you download the app. You can control the receiver from your phone.

I’m excited about that EQ option in the app. Honestly I’m excited about the whole damn thing!

Also my old system all settings were done through the tiny screen on the unit itself just having everything on a menu on the TV is going to be a huge jump. I’m getting so pumped for this!

Oh man, the only thing better than that is through a smartphone app. I have a cheap head unit in my boat that has an app for all the settings. So amazing....

strongly disagree on “speakers matter most” garbage in, garbage out => no speaker can fix bad downstream effects.

Acoustics do matter a lot, however most people won’t treat a room to get the most out of the sound as it’s a) expensive to do so and b) not really spouse friendly.

Yes this one has the smartphone app setup as well including an EQ that you can tweak while you sit on the couch where you should be to notice the differences in the changes you make anyway. Going to be fun

Oh that’s perfect. Finally, manufacturers of electronics have decided that rather than build in a fancy display and UI into the device itself, give it a simple display and let people use their own devices to interact with it. Then you just have to develop an app that’s easily updated.

In my boat this is especially important to me because the head unit is inside of a closed compartment across the boat from me where I can’t see or reach it.

I’ve hooked $10k bookshelf speakers to modest receivers with excellent results. To hear any difference in the minute changes electronics make in a system you’d need a damn near perfectly treated room. I’ve been in one, it taught me a lot. Even modest treatments in a room will enhance the experience more than any amp or processor could ever do. I’ve been fortunate to have been taught these things...makes me get the most bang for my buck and ignore marketing.

I have 45 years of experience in audio, I’m a purist but also understand that most people are ambivalent. I’ve hooked $500 speakers to $10K tube preamps and amps, coupled with a good front end pretty well any decent speaker will sound musical.
