Because New Zealand captured the America’s Cup they get to make the rules for the next race and it turns out they came up with a doozy of a boat.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

They never really liked the cats but this is going to be some weird racing. A monohull without a keel? Giant slicey blades hanging out in the air and supposedly FASTER than the cats.

Dang.

Those things are hardly boats any more. I watched a bit of the last AC race. I liked how the Kiwis used bicycles to keep up the hydraulic pressure (or whatever it was).

Yeah it was a smart move that basically won them the cup. As for them not being boats anymore...eh. it’s not like most top tier race cars resemble cars.

I was surprised to see this design using the hand cranks again.

It’s like a chameleon crossed with a boat. All I can see is chameleon feet.

I think they knew adding bikes would win them the cup but its not what they wanted to do. This takes it back a step.

If no hydraulics were allowed that would be interesting.

Sounds like Hydraulics will be back, unless I misunderstood.

I assumed they would be. Only reasonable option for moving the T foils. That is why it would be interesting if they were disallowed.

You could maybe do some sort of torque multiplication and a chain with a locking mechanism....mmmm....

I feel like it’s who can build the best boat AND display the best sailing ability. It seems like these crews aren’t really sailors anymore, and so I’ve lost interest. But I guess I’m just a romantic about these things; so ignore me.

But from a purely technical point of view, it’s cool to see how far technology can push a floating craft.

Wait is that really how it works? Winner makes the rules? Because I LOVE that and it should be the case in every form of racing.

Ooh man, that is sexy. It’s going to take a while for folks to figure out how to run those and foresee some potentially dramatic and catastrophic failures. But if they can make those work - wow.

It’s excellent. Mercedes F1 today should be like “okay new engine format and it’s 6 liter twin turbo v12s, let’s go!”

I saw this the other day and oh, man was I excited. When I first saw the foiling cats in SF (on TV), I vowed to go see them in person at the next AC, which we did this past June. It was awesome to see those things in person, screaming around on the water. We were out there in a spectator boat when the NZ boat pitch-poled; every team was just barely hanging on that day, it was incredible.

When they won, I was pissed at first because all the other teams signed on to an agreement that would have kept the boats the same, with an event every two years. Not only would this bring the cost down - a team doesn’t have to develop an entirely new boat every time - but it would allow them to use them year-round in the AC World Series, too. So, basically, continuous races every few months, rather than mulit-year gaps. But NZ didn’t sign on, at least in part because they didn’t want to keep sailing those boats.

So NZ was pretty much like, “we don’t really like this, so we’re going to win anyway and f-you we’re not signing anything. Winner makes the rules, losers are welcome to try and beat us. See you in 4 years.”

So when this boat concept appeared, my fears of something less exciting to watch were completely erased. This looks incredible, I can’t wait to see them in real life. Maybe I can talk my wife into going to NZ in 4 years.

That’s bonkers. They look ‘inherently unstable’ like an F-16.

Gonna be interesting to see the actual real world testing. Hopefully they won’t be all...
