I just handed over the title to my FJ80. A co-worker needed a car to use as a Tahoe beater, and found out I was giving away this truck, so she got first dibs. Unfortunately not before the radiator let go on a long-ish drive a couple of weekends ago leading to a somewhat expensive repair bill given the value of the truck.

Everything works except the door lock/unlock function on the key fob.

Hopefully it will have a long life as a second car up in the snow. The OME lift kit and tires will certainly get better use up there.

I also realized now that even tho I have 6 vehicles left, every single one of them is German and only one of them is not a BMW. Time to diversify again (maybe after I sell the Z3M and get rid of the i8).

Thoughts on what you might add to the stable?

Something in the exotic or semi-exotic GT car range. I like the DB11, although maybe thinking something like an SL65 from the 2009ish era. Thoughts welcome.

If you want a real challenge you could try and hunt down a manual Ferrari 612.

I looked at one a few years ago! Suffice it to say it didn’t drive like I hoped.

That is going on BAT. I’ll probably post a self-promoting link tho. :)

That’s a shame.

The only other suggestion I can think of in that category would be a manual V10 R8, though it doesn’t have as much GT cred as a DB11.

A buddy has one of the last year R8 V10 plus manual convertibles. Bought brand new for full freight, parked in our work parking garage. He let me borrow it a couple of months ago since he was worried it wasn’t getting driven enough.

And he’s right - it had only about 1200 miles. I felt bad taking it for the weekend, until I realized he basically never uses it. It hasn’t moved since I drove it last.

Part of me wants to offer to buy it from him since he’ll never really use it. But frankly I didn’t love it. Not exotic enough, if that makes any sense?

Maybe a Maserati Alfieri. After they beat Acura’s record for delayed exotic car gratification.

Haha! Well, it’s very pretty... Is it a completely new car, or just a re-skinned GranTurismo?

Wikipedia: It is based on the chassis of the lighter Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale with a shorter wheelbase of 24 cm, with locking transaxle and Ferrari-derived V8 engine of 4.7 liter 460 hp and 520 Nm at 4750 rpm.

The Alfieri was confirmed for production in 2016 at a Fiat Chrysler event on May 6, 2014 but now has been delayed to 2020 at the earliest.

Hmm, not exotic enough because it doesn’t really feel special?

I’ve never driven one, so I can’t say.

What about a McLaren 12C? I know that it’s more exotic than GT, but everything I’ve heard is that it rides very well on the road, has good visibility, and is easy to rack up miles in. Someone near me owns an orange one that I saw out on the road again the other day and all I could think is that it has aged remarkably well. I’m not sure how much of a headache they are to maintain, but prices have gotten well below $150k. Of course if you are interested in a V12 it obviously is 6 cylinders short.

I’m not an engine type snob at all as long as the car looks and sounds good.

The one (warning: anecdote incoming) person I’ve known that had a McLaren had trouble with it, and it was annoying to get it serviced. Of course I know several people with lots of miles in their Maseratis with minimal trouble and mine was plagued with problems so anecdotes are worth what you pay for them.

Yeah and now instead of a V8 it will have a V6...no wait a hybrid...no wait it will be electric. They might as well just say it will have warp drive and be delivered by angels at this point.

I can’t tell you what it was exactly. Maybe it was partially because it was *too* competent? The driving experience just didn’t feel special, and the cabin was far too “normal” to be nice, other than the really cool gated shifter. I definitely don’t think I’m a brand snob, since my favorite exotic I’ve owned so far is my i8. I’ve actually thought about just getting another one of those, but it’s due for a refresh at least of the powertrain.

You know maybe an NSX now that I think about it. But the fact that it took me so long to even consider that as an answer is indicative of how badly Acura screwed that car up I think.

Well if the R8 was too competent and too normal, I will assume you’ve thrown Porsche right out the window too :)

How about the McLaren 570GT? It’s a competitor with the aforementioned cars including the NSX, and being the GT version it’s a bit more relaxed of a drive and has a glass rear hatch.

Oh yeah, Porsches never appealed to me for the same reason Rolexes don’t. Each of them is too much the default “I’ve arrived” purchase at least among the folks I’ve worked with.

Listening to the Everyday Driver podcast. They both were really impressed with the Lexus LC500. Not sure if I could live with the predator grille, though...

Someone liked a post on here so I can back to this thread. And just the other day at the detail place I use a guy had a brand new LC500. It was legitimately gorgeous in person. How many other Lexuses (Lexi?) can you say that about? Probably zero. And it sounded great. He paid a hair under $100k, but if that can had almost any other badge on it, I think it would cost a lot more money. (Heck just write “Maserati Alfieri” on the back. In fact if I were the CEO of Maserati I’d probably try to do a Fiat/Miata style sharing - replace the motor, front and rear clips, wheels, and Italian-ize the interior, and you’d be able to sell them for $150k.)

For sure! Buy one, debadge it and buy a high quality aftermarket front clip (if it exists) and let people guess what kind of gorgeous automobile you’re driving around!
