Last Monday, I got a flat on the work truck. Today, while I’m waiting for it to get replaced so I can have a spare again, the other driver hit a bump and the rear window exploded. Now I’m terrified of the little 3-inch crack on the windshield of mine.

Windshields are laminated so it won’t explode into little pieces all over like a rear window would.

yep. windshields = safety glass. layer of polymer sandwiched between the glass sheets. holds together pretty well; I’ve seen shattered windshields able to just be “peeled” out of the aperture.
side/back/sunroof = tempered/”toughened” glass. “POP” into a million little glass pebbles.

Whenever it gets cold out (below freezing) I always worry about the windshield in my Mazda5. It seems like I can hear some flexing noises around the right A-pillar that make me think that it’s going to crack if I hit a pothole or something. But it’s been like this for 5 years now so maybe I don’t have anything to worry about.

This is one of the few things that movies seem to be correct about regarding cars - people remove windshields in one piece, more or less, though they’re usually kicking it out.
