Who am I?

1. I am a brilliant lawyer from one of the country’s best university.

2. I am married to a former President with questionable taste (and possible illegal acts) but great economic ability and popularity.

3. I have been involved in policy and government for decades.

4. I served federal congress.

5. My last name is not Rodham...

Kinja'd!!!

I am talking about Margarita Zavala, who is rushing to make the ballot for 2018 because a childish buffoon called Ricardo Anaya and a bunch of dicks in Mexico’s centre-right party: P.A.N. decided they wouldn’t have primary process and told her to basically suck it up and let the 38 year old idiot be the nominee. She did the right thing and left the party, now she’s gathering signatures to register as an independent candidate.

Yes, the conservative party decided that a lawyer from the Libre de Derecho (basically our version of Yale Law school) should let a guy that graduated from a state university (Queretaro) and an online college(UVM) and does very stupid attack ads.

Just to lose against our Trump figure: a faux-socialist, asshole demagogue that appeals to the blue collar workers that can’t bother to factcheck him on half his bullshit and is pushing Pinochet-like surveillance policies. Anaya has no chance againts Obrador(trump guy), and Zavala did!

Our 2018 elections will be a sausage party with stupid amounts of spending, corruption, lies, and possible foreign interference for which we aren’t ready for.

Carajo....

She is safe, she is a former first lady after all, although Calderon did not keep the presidential pension, he probably did keep the Presidential Guard’s security (here a part of the army) and that includes her, I think.

Yes, I am Mexican, and will be voting in 2018 as I did in 2016 for the constitutional assembly.

Your original post was about misogyny and I did not want to make any assumptions. So that’s why I asked.

So my dumb question: Do you know the American film Nacho Libre ? My wife and I watched that film last night for easily the 12th time, maybe more, and we love it for its silliness and what looks like an effort to cast real people from real towns in many of the roles. We would like to believe that the film contains perhaps a shred of cultural authenticity and not merely one trope after another. What do you think?

I mean, its a film about a lucha libre fighter called Nacho that falls in love with a nun and drives a cargo bicycle with a lawnmower engine around a deserted landscape and old timey towns.

It is full of bullshit, but I think that getting angry about a movie made to laugh about stereotypes is worse than whatever assumption the movie makes. Its much like Casa de mi Padre; its satirical comedy.

I just spent a day at the Bullock Texas State History Museum to learn a little bit about the state I’ve been living in. As you know, the history of Texas is all tied up with that of Mexico. One of the things I kept reading was how the government of Mexico has pretty much always been full of corruption. Apparently, that was one of the reason Stephen Austin went from being a loyal Spanish citizen to a huge proponent of Texas independence. Things that Uly has written here and what I read in modern news all intimate that the same is true today. It kind of makes me want to dig a bit deeper and learn more about our neighbor to the south and why things are the way they are and so very different from the US and Canada.

On the topic of misogyny, is this something that the Mexican media pushes in their stories? During and after the US election, there were those pointing fingers at misogynists for Clinton’s struggles and eventual loss. I still believe many of those who were left-leaning were disillusioned by the fact that Sanders wasn’t the presidential candidate, but then again I don’t thoroughly research US politics (it’s not my home).

Anyways, I hate that politics has this whole social identity thing (or whatever you want to call it) built into it - I don’t care if the president is a man, woman, homo/heterosexual, transgender, etc. I just don’t want them to be a corrupt wanker.

I think the Texas independence had to do a lot with our constitution banning slavery and anglo-saxon immigration from the United States.

Along with xenophonic laws like forcing the Spanish langauge and other cultural things.

Plus, Santa Anna was a very bad president, making a lot of stupid mistakes along the way during both the Texan independence and the Mexican American war.

But i’m happy you guys became independent and have such rich history, had Texas remained Mexican god knows what wasteland it would be today.

Quite interesting is the story of Nuevo Laredo and Laredo, worth reading why they became two cities!

We also have a fundamentally different culture to the US and Canada, corruption doesn’t come from this it comes from dissregard for the goverment and its policies, just look at the Mexican golden age and how it deteriorated further along.

How have you managed such good English?

I do not know much Spanish yet, but what Spanish I do know, I know better than most of my Spanish-speaking students. That is to say, I can speak like a second-grader than many of my students. I use Google Translate also, which seems to work well on that level. I keep the sentences simple enough that I can tell if GT is ripping me off or not.

My family is obsessed with languages, I took english courses my entire life! It also helps that I mostly watch and read British and american media.

I learnt a bit of French, mais est tres limité!

I think GT is a good tool as long as you have an empirical understanding of the structure and etymology of a language, for instance whenever I use GT for French I find myself thinking “Would that make sense in Spanish?” because sometimes its kind of brutish! For your use its mostly adequate.

Brutish. I teach math to adolescents in a public school. I do brutish. JK.

I like how you say things differently in different languages and for me, the rearrangement of the words, I map initially in English. All of my work in Spanish I have done on my own with Duolingo originally, and just learning to say things to the students like “take out your agendas,” and so on. I learned to speak a bit of German when I lived over there with the Army in the late 80s, and I took some French and I still remember a handful of words and phrases from that time. What fascinated me was in learning Spanish, my brain was still programed with the Deutsch from 25 years ago and it took a while for the Spanish to displace the German.

I took one Spanish class at the local university, but it was taught by a tiresome Spaniard who was actually a Spanish literature teacher and he just talked about food all day long every day. He did say one memorable thing: You haven’t experienced a foreign country until you’ve experienced hunger in that country .

My grandparents also has a flag in Galicia, but at least they understand the socio-political implications of leaving Spain and understand that the central government is, perhaps corrupt, lazy, overpromising, and unrepresentative of them but ultimately very important to keep order and health amongst everyone.

I have seen the independence movements there, those are based on racism and xenophobia, not around culture, which, is widely respected across Spain. I certainly do not know about any xenophobia in the Catalunian one, but it basically goes without saying.

If Catalunia wants to become independent, its not my fight to be honest, but certainly they could just admit that they hate poorer, southern Spainards and have a superiority complex that was gladly fed by EU subsides and investments.

One of the hallmarks of the Catalan independence movement is it’s lack of xenophobia. One of their stated goals is to make it easier for migrants to obtain work permits. Here’s a pretty good article detailing just how accepting the movement is towards non-native Catalans.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.politico.eu/article/catalonia-independence-spain-immigration-the-new-catalans/amp/

Not sure where you’re getting this idea that Catalans don’t like poor outsiders, but it is extremely off base and definitely not based on fact. The protests I’ve seen have always had a good smattering of “refugees welcome” signs and shirts. Catalans have an extremely open and welcoming society. This has been one of the driving factors of independence, as Madrid is considerably more right wing and authoritarian. Barcelona is one of the few major European cities where migranta can sell their wares without having to worry about being hassled.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

I don’t have an opinion on their independence as the people seem to be split 50/50 on the matter, but your assumption that the movement is xenophobic amd histile towards the poor is completely wrong.

Kinja'd!!! "Spanfeller is a twat" (theaspiringengineer)

Before anything: The central government’s response was pathetic and wrong, and that alone warrants a real uprising of all Spanish people because it was truly horrible. But independence is not the way . Just because a cartoon villan and bearded strongman hijacked the Catalonians it doesn’t mean that they should become independent.

Catalans are hostile to the poor outside their Autonomous Comunity. One of the reasons why the want independence is further control of tax policy (read: we hate paying for southerner’s welfare)

I say it goes without saying because any nationalistic movement carries xenophobia, and it is a nationalistic movement. Its not like Catalonia has it bad from the central government!

What I meant with Xenophobia (I did mention that I did not see it explicitly) is that perhaps Puigdemont didn’t say it, but many Catalonians certainly do feel it.

I think that Western media fundamentally failed to capture the essence of the situation and it was mostly highjacked by politicized news.Because imagine if it was about Texas, about a fringe movement that was given no real value for years because it wasn’t even contended.

Texas is rich in its own history and cuisine and politics (they certainly disagree with reps on border policy) But its also part of the US and it shares an American identity. Similarly Catalonia has their own culture and so on but they belong to the larger cannon of spanish history, of the Arab empire, the marrying of royals, the hundreds of wars and years upon years beneath the same flag.

Puigdemont doesn’t have the right hijack Catalonia or its people. Ask any European or anyone with a reasonable grasp of the issue at hand and the political ramifications and you would be scared that this is even happening because it stinks of nationalism and of years past that affected most Spanish people and Galicians, Catalonians, and Vasques. I’m Mexican myself thanks to Francisco Franco’s craziness and brutality against my family members just for speaking a different language! And, I don’t believe in a Hell but there certainly is one for him!

But again, this isn’t my fight, I’m just terrified of the world becoming split again over something so banal and meaningless as is nationalism.
