During a visit to Northern Ireland.

The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland (Martin McGuinness) asked, ‘are you well?’,

Her Majesty’s reply was, ‘well I’m still alive’.

It’s funny on to levels, one, because it is, and then two, because who the response is to and the history between the two. Sort of a verbal, sticking two fingers up, if you will.

The Duke of Edinburgh is like an uncle you don’t see all to often because things can get awkward fast.

I love this though.

Love it.

Sadly I believe so to.

I can only imagine that it’d knock Her Majesty for six.

Rehearsals and broadcast training in the event of either passing has been kicked up a few levels in the last few years.

I’m a proud monarchist and don’t really know how I’d take it.

I can still remember every moment from the first time I heard of Princess Diana’s passing to the following day.

I grew up with Her Majesty always being there, I can’t think what it’d be like for her not to be.

I’ve seen many of the protocols, rehearsals, training videos of different service and organisations. There is a meticulously planned and trained for system/programme that will kick in should anything happen.

It’s scary because it will happen, but no body wants it to happen on their watch.

That fuzzy haired buffoon can go bite a large one (by which I mean our fuzzy hair buffoon Johnson, not your fuzzy haired buffoon trump).

I’ve been out of that sphere for some time now.

I work nights filling shelves in a supermarket and free time cleaning friends cars to relax. Anybody with so much as an epaulette on their shoulder can four-cough.

I’m in a Facebook group which is consisted of several thousand people who have an intense, intense fixation on the royal family. It’s quite weird, gotta say that.

Many have a fixation for the royal family, to me they are a part of Great Britain, a living flag if you will that represents the United Kingdom it’s dominions, protectorates, etc... in fact the Royal Standard is never flown at half mast because there is always a monarch on the throne, even if one that moment has just passed on, the next in line takes their place, just as Her Majesty did when her father died all those years ago when Her majesty was so young.

Almost every member of my family has served in one way or another and gave our oath to the crown.

It’s very rare I hear about Australia, New Zealand (saying that they have been in quite a bit lately with the whole dual national thing) or Canada government in the news so I’m usually quite out the loop. I try to keep up by looking for hose sections on the BBC news website.

I’ve always been a, if your not hearing about them, they must be doing something right, kind of person when it comes to the news.

The thing I don’t get is it’s Australia and New Zealand, you’d be hard pushed to find a politician that has a long Australasian history so many will have dual citizenship either first or second generation from one side of the family or the other. Many of them are to commonwealth nations so what’s the issue?

section 44 of our constitution, basically you can only have one master.

but yeah, being part kiwi (like Barnaby Joyce) should be no issue. he was born here, yet because his father was a kiwi he inherited kiwi nationality, just straight out dumb.

Our buffoon is/was a dual citizen of the U.S. (he was born in New York)and like several call it the accident of birth. But it never was an issue until he inherited some money and the U.S. wanted it’s taxes. The U.S. has this thing that if your a U.S. citizen by birth only or a national living abroad, until you give up your U.S. citizenship if you earn more than a certain amount after paying taxes in the country your living it, any money can be taxed and be paid to the U.S treasury*.

But as a member of parliament he gave an oath to the crown so it wasn’t an issue.

*Which is crazy because it’s got to a point where some banks around the world won’t let a U.S. citizen open an account in the host country because that bank would have to enter an agreement to give any information on any U.S. citizens on it’s books and could be massively fined if it didn’t.

Do they retain any real power at all, or just the lifestyle of leaders of a nation/empire?

From an American perspective, could the royals be considered kind of like a whole family of First Ladies (goodwill ambassadors)?

No disrespect intended, just curious. What percentage of Brits are loyal pro-royals and what percentage want it all phased out?

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)

They have some powers but can’t recall off the top of my head what.

They are effectively good will ambassadors as you say. They were promote British industry and tourism abroad, encouraging investment into the U.K. they also represent a our history.

I think in this day and age the percentage is getting smaller of royalists. More and more are seeing them as a financial drain, though the running costs are equivalent to less than £0.50 per man, woman and child in the U.K. per year, yet the inward investment is in the billions. The majority of the royal family have other jobs that generate money for them. But unfortunately these days people being idiots that they are don’t see the work they do as being work and so complain at every opportunity of how they drain money from the taxpayers pockets, a financial burden, representative of a different time, think they look down their noses at people, etc... people like to complain and have someone to pass on the blame for themselves and any misfortune without actually looking into what they are talking about. It’s a shame because Her Majesty has worked tirelessly for the promotion of the U.K. to other nations and to foster family amongst the commonwealth 53 nations every since her coronation. People like to complain about any body who they think is better than them that they look down on them. It’s tragic. People are stupid.

I myself love my queen and remain her humble servant.

As an outsider, it’s impressive that they were able to make the transition from supreme monarch to nearly-powerless figurehead peacefully and still have the love of many of their people.

It helped that the last arguably supreme British monarch got his head cut off on the orders of an aspiring military dictator in 1649.

I forget which prime minister it was, someone recent. But I remember an interview where maybe it was Tony Blair was saying how it was nice to have someone around who’d been “in charge” of the country for so long, seen every prime minister struggling with almost every situation. Again I don’t remember the exact quote, but it was something like “I was just talking to Her Majesty the other day, and mentioned [issue X], and she said, ‘Well, when Winston had that problem, he [...]’”. Just having that sort of person around who’s seen so much even in just an advisory capacity is incredibly useful.

The change came many years ago, in fact the Magna Carta was the start of it really, but Cromwell back in the 17th century played a part, there were other things through out history also.

The most recent change was at Her Majesty’s request. The Queen doesn’t have to pay tax but chose to with the country and the people struggling with finances, the Queen felt it wasn’t right for herself not to. She also cut back on her expenses, etc... after the whole financial cluster f*ck of 2008. Even reducing how much food, etc... was used for state visits, saying it wasn’t right to spend so much money while her people struggled.

That’s what really bugs me about people who want rid of the monarchy, they don’t bother to learn or understand what it is they want rid of.

Most of the tax payer money they receive is to maintain the estates which are in the most part maintained for the benefit of the country and it’s history, the other largest outlay is travel expenses. Most of the travel is done low key on commercial aircraft with other members of the public.

There is so much, but so little is learned and appreciated.

Her Majesty in her reign has seen so much change in the world, witnessed so many kings, Queens and world leaders come and go, saw the best humanity has to offer in it’s bleakest times to the sheer awfulness that humanity can create.

That isn’t something to ignore.
