My Camry is an ‘89, the model that began the Camry fame in the US. Car has 240k miles, of which we’ve clocked over 100k. Lots of new parts under the hood, a wee bit of blue smoke, still passes smog. Great car.

When it was new in 1989, the cost of it was over $18k, which would be in the $35k range today. They were considered expensive when they were new.

Nice to know they’re still going strong. Ive got a 2004 Solara with 212,000 miles. Im the second owner and neither they nor I have done anything other than normal maintenance (oil, brakes, air filter, and timing belt at proper intervals). The exception is the replacement of both rear calipers due to some sticking at 206,000 miles.

Something to covet in 30 years when it is completely worn out and barely running.

The irony here is that it was owning a MKV Jetta that drove me to buying a Camry. Don’t miss that pile of shit one bit.

Had an ‘88 5M Camry wagon, so basic. Yours was the year they switched from it saying “TOYOTA” on the grille, to having the Toyota logo. In any event, those cars were a great size and largely bulletproof.

Mine has new everything under the hood, except the original block and head. I’ve done a lot of maintaining, to be sure, but that has kept the car great.

There is something to be said for nice reliable boring cars.

We bought the Fit at 38,000 miles, and we’ve put over 30,000 on it. Only problem we’ve had is we had to replace the HVAC blower motor. That was 360 bucks.

Not bad for 2.5 years with an 11,000 dollar car. I’m sure in the next year or so there will be some brake work to do, but that just maintenance.

Oh - my ‘88 wagon, 5MT, cloth seats, metallic gray, out the door for $14,800 + tax & tags. I remember b/c I had a fight w/ the dealership having bought an ‘87 300D from them the year before. That Camry was good people ....

If you don’t care about anything other than basic, reliable transportation, you could do a lot worse. See also, Accord. It’s what a Taurus used to be - when I rent one, I know precisely what I’m getting.

Worse than a Camry, you’re saying? How is Accord what the Taurus used to be? I’m curious.

I am partial to the Impala, which isn’t all that basic or reliable, which is why I sold mine.

Yeah, reliable, pleasant to drive, and practical . I stumbled into a Nissan Versa this past summer and I am astounded by how much I like it. But it’s not so nice that if someone rams it with a shopping cart, I will lose any sleep. Rides nicely, handles nimbly, adequate pep, responsive brakes, seats are higher off the ground so easier to get into, and the doors swing plenty wide.

I rented a lot of cars in the mid-90s, when I was in law school. Everybody, especially Enterprise, had Tauri. And, given that I eventually bought an SHO, it was a design and size I was comfortable with. Now the Camry and Accord are more popular with rental fleets, it seems. I’ve yet to rent a current-design Taurus. Maybe there’s an SHO on Turo ....

Turo; thank you. I’ve been meaning to ask what the name of that outfit is. For Christmas, perhaps, I’ll treat myself to a day in some fool’s V8 Vantage or CTS-V or Ghibli.

I like the couple of Tauri I’ve driven, and the Duratec engine ran like a scalded dawg.

Gotten everything from an SL to a Volt off Turo - it’s a nice thing to have in your back pocket. Instead of a Ghibli, you should seek out a Panamera - much more dynamically satisfying, I’m told.

I’m kind of * yawn * about Porsches. Any Oppo will tell you that the Maserati is a notoriously undependable car, but I’ve always been curious about them. Seriously though, don’t the renters on Turo know that their cars are going to get driven spiritedly ? If they’re lucky?
