wood sticks bent like that too, it’s just that we didn’t really have the high-speed photography to show it. Baseball bats are solid wood, yet they bend like crazy on a hard hit.
the slap shot is rare now because it’s worthless. Players have become so big that a slap shot from the point is going to get blocked 95% of the time before it reaches the net. And those that aren’t, the goalie has a clear look at the puck and can stop it.
I mean, check this video from 1985. No one is really running any traffic in front of the nets, players are skating around with room to spare, and the goalies mostly stay on their feet instead of flying around butterfly-style like is common today:

Forwards have always used the wrister more then the slapshot, but yeah even with the d-men the slapper is falling out of fashion. It’s great if you can one time it, not so much in other situations. Reilly (Leafs D) was asked about it earlier this year, he said he pretty much cut it out of his game because it took longer to get off than a wrist shot.

webers scores on his slapshot a lot because aint a soul in the world who wants to block something traveling 110mph and even then he tends to go wide right, and stamko’s shot is more of a heavy snap shot rather than a full slapshot, he doesnt have a huge back swing. even ovi’s heavy shot is now more of a quarter-half draw back now

The article gives a pretty good analysis, I think, though I don’t know much of anything about the sport. My brother (Oppo Ttyymmnn) has been a close follower for over 40 years. He’s also a good person to watch a game with on the telly because he’ll explain what’s going on and why; the subtleties...

Excluding one-timers, and descendants of Al MacInnis, there are no good reasons to use a slap shot instead of a wrist shot or a snap shot. With today’s protective equipment, no one thinks tqice before trying to block a slap shot these days.
