Kinja'd!!!

So, here I am, minding my own business at 45 MPH when *BANG* and I almost lose control of my recently acquired 2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport. “One of my brand new Michelin Alpin PA4s must’ve been defective and blown out,” I think in the instant while wildly countersteering to stay in my lane on the busy street before the I-66 onramp.

After 100 feet of skid, the car stops, and I try to drive to the shoulder but to no avail. The tach sticks at 2500 RPM and I can feel the car hunching up with the torque. Huh. Reverse? No deal; still stuck. I hit the OnStar, call for a tow, and wait by the side of the road. A quick glance with my cellphone camera tells me all the diff mounts are busted to shit. I can only wait for CadillacCare to give me a tow to the local dealer.

Is there any recourse for a guy whose car tried to kill him? If it had been 100 yards later or if I’d punched it on the onramp instead of after the intersection, I’d be writing this from a hospital bed. Really, I just want them to pay for new rear tires. I dropped it off this morning but haven’t heard anything back yet.

Glad you’re ok buddy. This type of stuff is dangerous as hell and this could’ve ended really badly, you should push it and make them give you compensation.

Too many brake stands? Sounds like a BS issue for 42k

Sure, but how? I hope they buy it back from me but that’s never gonna happen. How can I ever trust this car again?

You’re very fortunate you avoided a collision. I don’t think there’s any mileage where a seized diff is acceptable... maybe on a 1996 Cherokee with a broken odometer.

Yeah hilarious but it’s a one-owner car not indicated as fleet use. Found an ATM receipt in the car with a checking balance of 42k... not the brake-standing type.

Makes for a damn fine glamour shot, if I don’t say so myself. No wonder the marketing team moved to Manhattan.

only had one diff blow up on me

1997 JR Holden Vectra in 2003, got rid of it and bought my Lancer.

If it’s just a matter of a blown diff they’ll replace it and send you on your way. I wouldn’t lose trust in the car over that. If the problems continue, well that’s another story.

This will be a tough one to get over... But if they really REALLY go above and beyond and give you a new diff, excellent service, a free loaner, and maybe some other thing (I don’t know... Snickerdoodles would be nice), it would at least open the door for you to not abandon ship.

Of course the next time you hear a scary noise your mind will immediately tell you: “What expensive thing broke this time?”

CTS with diff issues, that’s never historically been an issue has it?

Keep driving it but make a big deal of it to the dealer. They’ll then try to buy u back with stuff but don’t give in right away. Always be skeptical.

That’s an outrageous thing to fail so early in the car’s life. Glad you’re ok.

at least its pretty by the lights.

That sucks. I’ve heard about bad axle seals, was oil leaking adn getting slung underneath?

Depends on if they fix it or no. I would want to know why it seized. Just a single gear ratio so unless a catastrophic failure not much should actually seize it.

For instance, my thermostat exploded because it’s made of cheap plastic. If the diff broke because of bad design I wouldn’t trust it. If you just had a gear randomly shatter.... it rarely happens. Sometimes just bad metallurgy.

Just curious was there any warning signs like whining? Or jumping when turning? I’m not excusing that it should have never happened just curious if there were any clues.

File a safety defect claim with NHTSA and raise hell. GM after all their issues truly should make this right and want that differential back for analysis.

That sucks- and is pretty damn scary!

They should fix it and hook you up with a good loaner, maybe a few freebies beyond that, but I wouldn’t expect much more.

I would trust it after that, as long as the issues don’t continue.

Is this a thing with V sports or just a weird random failure?

Good luck!

Hmm, that is an interesting fail. I would be very interested in what the tech finds. I am sure GM will cover it, but what an odd failure.

For everyone who was wondering, here’s the report. If you look up the trans part number, it’s $4500 by itself!

GM says the trans is $5k (customer pay) and with warranty markup it is $5,600
