Thinking of picking one up on sale. A jvc for 300. Anyone have one? any buyers remorse?

Also, took the bike for a rip today. Thanksgiving when it’s 90 degrees feels weird

I’d say to get them to install it, but I’m thinking of doing a similar thing for my RAV4. It’s a Limited, but since it’s older, the backup camera is in the rearview mirror and there’s no touchscreen radio. I’m thinking about an Entune screen (radio is designed like a square to be replaced by navigation) with CarPlay/Android and maybe have the dealer re-wire the backup camera if possible.

CarPlay is better to use, but Navigation is better with Android Auto, because Google Maps, not fucking Apple Maps. Other than navigation, I actively tried to avoid it, because functionally is was much worse than my infotainment system.

Why not just get a magnetic phone mount? Android Auto works on most Android phones now.

I have a Pioneer A/V head unit which supports both. up ‘til a few months ago I was using CarPlay, then switched to AA when I got a Pixel 2. my comparison:

CarPlay:

(+) Allows you to use the iPhone’s interface while connected

(+) Better for playing music on your device (if your infotainment is aftermarket and doesn’t read vehicle speed sensor data) because you can browse your entire library from your A/V touchscreen

(-) Apple Maps is OK but still has issues with data correctness

(-) App selection is very limited because Apple forbids most apps which duplicate the functionality of built-in ones

(-) Connection can be flaky and (IIRC due to Apple’s additional requirements) can be crashy. I had CarPlay up and disconnect out of nowhere numerous times, and every so often it would freeze and cause my radio to reboot

Android Auto:

(+) Allows apps which do similar things to the built-in ones; e.g. if you use Waze for nav it runs in Android Auto

(+) Home screen is “cards” with relevant info instead of Apple’s lazy “grid of app launcher icons”

(+) UI is better organized with apps of similar types being grouped in the “dock” bar at the bottom of the screen

(-) completely locks out the phone’s UI while connected. I understand why, it’s still a disadvantage compared to CarPlay

(-) Voice recognition/processing isn’t intuitive. Not clear what you have to say to Google Assistant to get it to do what you want

(-) the color contrast on the Maps app is very light and it’s almost impossible to tell the roads from the map background.

I used it for a few days on the rented Mercedes. I didn’t love it. Check the specs of your phone first. My nexus 5x seemed to get pretty dodgey when running it. There were a couple major annoyances. First was the aforementioned performance and the other was unsupported apps. Tidal, which I use for music wasn’t supported. I could still play music using the app but I has to exit AA to change tracks and the head unit volume control didn’t work if the app didn’t support AA. So whatever the head unit volume was before playing music in Tidal was the volume forever until you loaded up a supported app like Spotify. That sucked.

All in all, its kind of a “great for limited things”. Myself, I may just get a Pumpkin Android head unit instead.

Thanks for the tips. I’ve got a nexus 6p and use google music, soI don’t think there will be a problem there. I think I’ll try it just via the app on my phone on a mount and see if I actually use it

I’m coming from an 07 a4, so anything would be better than my current ‘infotainment’ solution lol. Mostly just looking for something to give me access to music and give directions occationally

I think I’ll try that first to see if I like it, then upgrade to the head unit if I find myself using it

I prefer Waze, so I honestly don’t find it all that usefull.

I imagine you would have to make your phone a hotspot, or have a 2nd 4G sim for the headunit to connect to the internet to get it’s data?

Hey man, just remove the buttons from the headunit, double din mount and a Nexus 7 and some tape and a tape aux plugged in before you remove the buttons and you’re good!

You can use Waze on Android Auto because they were bought by Google.

Last I checked it only worked on headunits with Android Auto, and not the smartphone app. Has that changed?

That I do not know. My experience with it has been on new GM products and a main customer request is using Waze. Our product trainer let me know that since Google bought Waze, that Waze was added to Android Auto. So maybe it does work in the app now? I use an iPhone and so does the rest of the staff here.

I’ll download it again to see if that’s an option now.
