Guard Duck was one of the OG off topic / oppositelock commenters who disappeared with the great platform migration and went to google+ rather than stick around here. But prior to that he was a friend, wealth of knowledge, and all around great guy here, and he remained the same or even more so once we got to know him better on that platform.
Sadly, Guard Duck passed this morning. He was with his wife, and had put all of his affairs in order and faced his end with an attitude that left all in his wake amazed. He went out as he lived, on his own terms. He will be missed, he was absolutely one of us, and I think the world is a less magical place without him.
He died with far more grace than most people live with. (Sorry Scorp, I’m stealing your words, they fit perfectly).

I never knew the fellow as it was prior to my finding this place, but it’s always sad to hear of someone’s passing. My condolences to his friends and family. Oppo salutes you Guard Duck. :)

I saw him in person a couple of weeks ago, he was clearly aware of what he had left, but I tell you. I have never, ever, seen someone who was so stubborn and prideful and snarky and positive and sarcastic, while simultaneously being accepting of his situation, and knowing what lay ahead. I say without exaggeration that he inspired more people with his attitude once he knew the situation than most people do in their entire life. He beat the horrible beast once (the big C), but it came back. He had some really good times in the middle though. And he and his wife were truly appreciative for that extra time when everything came back to normal. And they did make the most of it.

Very sorry for your loss. I can only imagine what a shining person he was in real life.
When he said he was leaving Oppo I tried to convince him to stay. I received a reply in which he said he was really leaving. At this point, if it were almost anyone else, that would have been that. But I enjoyed his posts and conversing with him so much I sent another message practically begging him. I’ve missed him ever since.
