Corolla gonna Corolla

Kinja'd!!!

Waited for traffic to approach before pulling out

 No lights

Turned into incorrect lane (and was not turning left as long as he was in sight—probably 5 minutes)

Very slowly accelerated to ~10km/h below the limit and maintained that speed with sporadic braking

Also, I’ve got to repost this because it still amazes me:

Kinja'd!!!

Especially fuck that Venture driver for blocking you from an escape route.

I’m not super pissed about the initial move, because naturally you wouldn’t expect the guy in front to be suck an idiot. Also, I have a stupid habit of running up to the guys who cut in front of me like that instead of nailing the brakes hard, so I could technically have given more space. However.

- The Venture had probably already been behind this person for enough time to evaluate their lack of ability and they were sitting at the corner long enough that they should have been able to see the situation developing.

- The Venture almost left me enough room for a “fuck you I’m pissed” sized gap but not quite. Fine. Not like he meant it, and it’s for the best that I don’t get those tight gaps anyway. But then maintaining that snails pace right in my rear quarter where I can barely see you...

So yeah. IMO not “especially” fuck the Venture, but still fuck the Venture

Just getting back from Europe, I notice something - there, people who don’t want to drive take advantage of the best transit in the world, or maybe drive a Meriva or similar. Here, they run to Corollas or dopey small CUVs.

It’s uncanny how you can predict behaviour so often based on the vehicle choice.

But hey, the target market for these things is literally “Look, a car” type people.

Things I give a wide berth - Civrollas and their Korean counterparts, small hybrids or EVs, and dopey CUVs. All are magnets for people who shun the idea of being an attentive involved driver - rather, they mix timidity and passive-aggressive incompetence. These are the ones who will hit the brakes for a green light and honk back when you honk at them. Not all will be steered by an idiot, but enough are to give them the same treatment.

I still find the number of awful drivers in Corollas and Civics in Ontario surprising, considering the exorbitant insurance rates for ‘popular’ cars.

That said, if I had an awfully long commute, I could entertain the idea of driving a hybrid at 8/10s and still getting 35+ mpg.

I was quoted $9000 to insure a Cavalier once. Ontario is ridiculous.

However, I think it’s most likely that these guys are the REASON insurance is high... if they left the segment the cost would eventually follow them

I think insurance for making me the primary driver of my family vehicles might be $3,000ish/year outside of the city of Toronto (older midsize wagon, old minivan).

I’ve also recently heard that RBC Insurance now has the lowest rates for young drivers as primary operators.

Good point, but you can probably pull that off in a modern diesel too, hopefully without the roly poly handling and looks.

Confession.. I have done what the second corolla did, but that was just after I got back from India, after spending a month driving on the left..

Confession: I’ve NEARLY done it. While yapping at someone next to me turning onto a quite wide street from a narrow street at an obtuse angle. Whereas this was a vehicle with one occupant at an intersection of two equal roads where the turn was an acute angle.

So yeah, it *could* happen to most people under the wrong circumstances but I’d have thought this corner was pretty much idiot proof from that aspect since you’ve have to turn SO MUCH tighter than usual... I reserve the right to laugh.
