Kinja'd!!!

After 3 years this month, I have added a total of 75,000 miles to my 2001 Miata. Most of which was done while having a 15 mile round trip commute! And some I even carpooled so I drove even less. Meaning that the majority of those miles were all for fun. It’s easy to see when I casually drove to Toronto, Orlando, Deals Gap, and then of course across the country. And never do I take the shortest route because there’s always a fun road somewhere! Now my car is officially old.

And of course I celebrated by taking my Miata to work instead of the subaru and going on some wild Canyon runs. I took Mulholland to Encinal in the morning and then Decker to Mulholland in the evening. Finally got to do both in the daylight since I got to leave a little early! Looking forward to the new tires on the subaru so I can see how the cars really compare.

Our previous car had 15,788 when she went in for her first MOT (road worthiness check)which is done annually from when the car reaches three years old.

Dont worry, I will certainly get there! Just need another few years. I should be ideally driving the car a little bit less now that I have two cars but I am in Socal now as well so it might not change lol. I also definitely need paint, just curious if you dont mind how much are you paying for a paint job? I am trying to shop around to get something affordable.

Yeah the whole car, Granted this is the I help discount. I tore the car down and removed what was needed. I also helped with some of the sanding. This is also a cash discount deal. My paint job is going to buy some Big Block Chevy Cylinder heads for a 68 Camaro project of our painter. So kinda a win win for both of us.

The paint on my car was bad in the front where it had been repainted years ago. The front bumper is a oem replacement mazda unit. So the car got hit years ago but nothing on the carfax. No biggie as both fenders are oem as well as the hood. Drivers fender was bad enough tho that the clear was coming off in huge flakes. What will suck is I autox and do track days with the car. Going to have to protect this paint. Probably do a clear bra or something. Took a lot of work to get this car flat again with the 5,000? rock chips on the front. I am not joking it was almost white in some sections. Figure this car has seen at least 10k of track miles with me. Probably seen over 2000 runs at autox events. Car gets used. Just want it back so I can start doing the mods. Exhaust, Intake, Maybe the flat top intake as well as the springs of 500/275 for the koni shocks. Would love this to be on for my first event of the year at Roebling Road. Finally getting my NASA Instructor License. Hello cheap track days.

Nice! Yeah I definitely will be using the Miata just as much so I am just as worried about getting the car painted. Seems like such a waste to me since paint doesnt help the car go faster lol. But I already committed to having all of the rust cut out and all of the dents and crap fixed. So I might as well do the last step and just get it painted. I had just as many rock chips and the peeling fenders as well.

Eww rust. Glad I live in the South. The only rusty car in the fleet is our 24 hours of lemons 1972 Dodge Coronet. Old owner is on here. But the roof is rusted out as well as some of the floor as well as the quarter panels. But we painted that so it should stop that. I mean its a lemons car after all.

Just a little rust.

Yeah rust free miatas dont exist in the northeast lol. This is why people here in Socal looked at me funny while i was shopping for cars and seemed to be so worried about checking for rust. They were like “whats rust?” Yeah I would have been better off getting rid of my Miata and just finding a clean one here but at least now its mostly rust free and shouldnt really rust more out here. So its worth keeping at this point.

Yeah years ago I need a car and there was a $800 Civic Hatch. they were moving and had 3 cars and 2 drivers so they were selling it cheap. Being South Carolina and the number being local I went to look at it. Found the back half of the car had holes. Drove it but it was rusty so I had to walk away. They were like yeah it came from New Jersey and its a great car. Saw the car two days later when the last day of them being in town and the car was down to like $400. Still 100% nope from me. Screw working on rusty cars.

It ain’t that bad. It’s funny what people consider a “rusty car” in places without rust though lol

Sure it is. I parted a very rusty 95 Laguna/Tan miata out that lived in Ohio. Yeah it was free but man just about every bolt fought me. Some would never come out. The diff in that car was glued to the power plant frame forever. So yeah rusty cars suck to work on. I love being able to go to the junk yard and every bolt come out. Or even work on my own car.

I remember when my dad took our 90 Suburban to Canada and it needed an exhaust. Guy quoted 6 hours as he figured it was rusted out. He called 30 mins later and said it was done. My dad was puzzled as he said 6 hours. Guy said he had never had an old truck come in where the bolts came right off with no issues. Even knocked the price down by half as he did not need to drill out bolts. Buddy is debating moving north and I keep saying stay south where the motor sport activities last all year round and the cars come apart.

Having exhaust bolts come out without trouble sounds absolutely absurd to me haha. And any time I am working on a car, if I dont break a bolt or have to soak everything in penetrant first, it feels like cheating. Rust has always been an unavoidable reality when it comes to anything located on the bottom of the car. That will take me a LONG time to adjust to. My STi should be super easy to work on since its a 100% socal car. But the Miata still has plenty of rust crap on the bottom but I should be able to clean most of it off now and keep it from coming back.
