BJ’s has a really good deal where I get free installation of Michelin tires (on top of $70 off, booooyaaaaaa) so I decided to get X-ice3s with my Elantra. I’ve heard that these are among the top 3 (as with the Blizzak WS80 and Nokian Finnish Cavalry R2). I like how the Michelins are said to tolerate higher temperatures and provide excellent dry traction. I just want to know if anyone on here has had these tires before and what their thoughts are. I’m getting them in 195/65r15 size to fit my shiny new steelies that I just got.

Also side note, first gen GMC Canyons/Chevy Colorados suck, I went through 3 of them at work already.

People I have known, their vehicles, their opinion of x-Ice xI3s and what they have happily replaced them with:

Me: 2014 Fiesta ST, they suck, terrible, terrible braking performance on all surfaces, unnervingly bad in the wet, Toyo Observe Garrit KX.

My Friend M.H, 2009 Saab 9-3 Turbo-X, They suck, terrible braking performance on all surfaces, pretty crap on wet, no good at all on ice, Hankook something something Icepikesomething.

My Friend E.M., 2015 VW Golf GTI, they suck, terrible braking performance on all surfaces and useless on ice, Blizzak WS80s.

M.H. And I both put up with them for two seasons because we’re cheap bastards, E.M. ditched them after one winter and less than 5000 miles. We’re all in central and Northern Vermont and drive fast.

There’s a reason X-ice Xi2 production overlapped for so long. Xi3s are better than Goodyears or Feddies, but that’s not saying too much.

How were they in general?

Is it because Xi3's aren’t that good? If so what would be a better tire instead of the Xi3?

the xI3 is indeed not a good winter tire. The All Season Khumo Solus’s that came on my 2011 Elantra Touring had comparable snow and ice performance, and FAR superior wet performance. the best thing I can say about the xI3s is that they were pretty OK on cold, dry pavement.

The Dunlop Winter Maxx is a very good winter tire

Really? I keep hearing reviews stating that they’re great.

the guys at the local tire dealer I ordered my Toyo’s from agree that the xI3s are crap, I told them I bought them based on the reviews, and they said “yeah, its crazy, the only thing we can come up with is that Michelin is paying for this reviews, because you are NOT alone in feeling they don’t live up to the hype” I find it hard to beleive that there are that many paid positive reviews on the interwebs...BUT... If you look carefully at the reviews of them on Tire Rack and filter by states that get *real* snow and. Winter conditions, people in the north-east and north-mid-west have routinely given them mediocre reviews. People from New Jersey and Virginia and North Carolina and Missouri think they are the second coming.... Probably because of how much better they are in the snow than the now-bald OEM all seasons that came on thier car. That still doesn’t explain all the “top” ratings from review outlets, but all my real-world experience indicates they are NOT good snow tires and almost anything else is a better bet. I’ve always been a fan of the Dunlop Wintersport series, but they don’t come in sizes to fit the Fiesta ST. The Toyos were very good thier first season, but they seem to have short tread life and they are not that great this year, but still better than the xI3s.

Fair enough. The Xi3s on the Sonata are decent on dry, packed snow but they suck whenever things get watery.

General Altimax Arctics, Nokian Hakka R2s, and WS80s immediately spring to mind.

Hm... So what would you recommend for me to get? Keep in mind most of my miles will be on dry roads and temps where I live will be above 40 degrees about 60% of the time.

Most of my miles will be on dry pavement, I do not want a tire that will be noisy and it needs to be somewhat affordable.

I really miss the Dunlop Wintersports. I had Wintersport 3Ds on my 2011 Elantra touring and on my 1998 Volvo V70 AWD, they were excellent on dry pavement and still very capable on snow and ice. They are my all-time favorite “performance” winter tire. I trust Dunlop’s ability to make a capable winter tire thats also an excellent dry-cold-road tire. Sadly their sizing is a bit limited. I like the Garrit KXs and they are a bit squirmy on dry pavement, but better than full-on winter tires like the WS80 or Altimax Arctics... They’re cheaper than the Pirellis too, but I hear good things about the winter sottozero. If you dont have *serious* winter conditions the “all-season” Nokians like the WR series may be a good bet. My GF has had the Nokian Rotiiva AT’s (the light-truck version of the WR series) on her truck for a while, excellent all-weather tire with good snow performance when you need it.
