Edit: I’m not actually upset at my dad and I didn’t voice any of these opinions to him. I think it’ll be great for his purposes, I just think its ugly as hell. Lighten up everyone.

Im back home for Thanksgiving and I walked into the garage to see he had bought a brand new Civic Sport hatchback without telling me. The ONLY credit ill give him is that its the best color scheme available, but other than that I think hes crazy. Looks basically like this, and this is about the only flattering angle of the whole car.

Kinja'd!!!

He has a history of questionable car buying decisions, but his last car was actually solid. A 2006 Accord coupe 4 cylinder that was at 200k when he traded it. Before that though he bought a CVT 4 cylinder Altima for my mom, a CVT murano before that, and a B5 A4 2.8 quattro that only made it to 80k before needing to be dumped.

Every single one of these times I have suggested other options that were in the same price range that would have been not only more reliable but also more fun. Every single time they just go with whatever deal sounds right to them on whatever car they like the “feel” of. Bear in mind my dad was considering cars like an s2k to replace the accord, so the heartbreak was even worse.

My advice this time around was to drive my 3g Acura TL and get a feel for it, and then if he likes it get a super clean low mileage type-S with a stick. That would have been a nice improvement in just about every way over his accord but without changing basically anything about the ownership experience and reliability. Also, it would be about half the price...

Kinja'd!!!

Does he even know that things like the IS-F exist?

Kinja'd!!!

Sure, these are much older options and don’t have the warranty and peace of mind that a new car affords you, but there are tons of more modern and sensible options that he could have bought with a warranty. Ill drive it tomorrow and probably change my mind and think that its great, but I sure as hell wont admit it to you guys.

He wants something with utility, wouldn’t be surprised if he got himself an x1 or something like that. He had a manual diesel x1 in France as a rental and loved it.

Haven’t driven them, but reviews say the Civic Sport is supposed to be pretty fun for an all-rounder, despite not being very fast.

Let us know your thoughts after a drive. Did he get the manual?

At least it’s the hatch, I guess?

My dad has spent his entire life on a regular, unintentional rotation from truck to sportier European car to efficient commuter and back again. The order isn’t always exactly the same due to life changes and pairing with whatever my mom is driving but the cycle is 100% predictable nonetheless. I believe he’s on his 12th car (lifetime) and thus ending the fourth cycle. The pattern so far is something like A, B, C / B, C, A / C, A, B / B, C, A. I assume the fifth cycle will begin in a few years when he retires.

I feel your pain. My father replaced the beloved ‘89 Golf 5-speed with a ‘15 Subaru with a frickin CVT! I do understand about 70+ year-old knees not liking clutches, but the CVT was a bridge too far imo. However, he’s the one who drives it and he likes it, so I’ll just have to content myself with making sure the Magic Fluid gets changed every 60k or so.

I counted that as a “sportier European car,” which is true comparatively and I know is how he thought of it. It’s certainly the most luxurious car he’s ever owned. I can’t really fault his taste overall. The most boring cars on this list are all good, practical machines; and the unreliable ones are at least interesting. He may have actually made money on the Jetta TDI. The Passport was objectively a piece of shit but it was kind of cool and was a manual—in fact, it was the car I learned to drive stick in.

Give me some Type-S wheels. One of the finest stock wheels to be put on a car in the 2000's. I would have a set on my Civic right now if it wasn’t a 4 lug Civic. I could always convert it using EK9/ITR parts, cause I’m not using wheel adapters.

Nah, I didn’t. It’s cool to offer advice, but just because something might be a better deal doesn’t mean he’d like it.

There were a whole lot better options around for my stepdad when he bought that Fleetwood, but it was what he wanted. And he loved it for the couple years that it wasn’t always breaking down. I’m a big fan of old-man cars, but I hated that car.

I am way biased against them as a friend had a Justy years ago. Was fairly new but still horrible. The trans died before 100k if I remember right. And my former boss bought a Cube. I took care of vehicles at that company so ended up knowing more about the Nissan CVT than I wanted.

No way to check fluid level

‘Lifetime’ fluid

Due to problems/recall, new units were ‘on back order: may take a couple months’

The local dealer flat-out denied that there was even any way to change the fluid. That it was ‘lifetime: you don’t >need< to change it’ !

So, yeah, great idea, but I’m not a fan of current CVTs.

I think he made a good deal at Honda’s expense. The hatch’s are kind of the tweener for them, more expensive than a sedan, but not more than a sedan. It’s a neat car in the sport package, but won’t appeal to the masses.

He’s driving a car he won’t see every day. That’s ok. I wish they made a touring with a stick as I would probably buy one too.
