Kinja'd!!!

Actually, I bought two. Two cams, two memory cards, and two car outlet extenders -can we agree to call them cigarette lighters?

I’ve been holding out on getting one, but my morning commute is getting scarier and scarier, so it feels necessary. The wife just took a job down town as well. I’ve already gotten an earful on how god awful the drivers are.

I installed the first in the Abarth on Monday. The other is on hold until it’s fully confirmed welike the style then it will be going in the wife’s Beetle.

-prepost: here’s to hoping these pictures don’t get Kinja’d

Kinja'd!!!

It mounts on top of the rear view mirror. Both my car and the beetle have low tech mirrors; no auto dim, garage door openers, or other buttons to be had. Neither car has a back up camera either and this doubles as a back up camera on top of recording the front and rear of the car.

So far I’m pretty happy with it. I switched it to HD recording. I put a foam strip between the camera and the original rear view mirror as the glass was vibrating terribly while driving. The video was very stable and clear, however the actual rear view function was terrible. The foam works quite well.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

And while it’s not totally discrete from the front, it’s pretty dang slick.

Kinja'd!!!

I have a recording of it playing a recording, but nothing pulled from it to post yet. I will follow up with that as I know that’s kind of what this post is lacking.

Realistically, I should probably get one.

It was almost beneficial within the first five minutes of having it in the car. Can’t complain for the possible peace of mind it could provide.

You should probably get another SD card. SanDisk’s warranty explicitly states that it’s void if you use it in a dashcam. They require you to buy the High Endurance model with MLC flash instead. The T in TLC stands for Tofu.

Cool, it looks very integrated, which is nice - I have a ‘regular’ dashcam mounted below my rear view mirror. Works well, but it’s not discrete!

The quality isn’t bad though - here’s a clip from mine of some idiot stopping in the middle of the oncoming lane when passing a garbage truck back in September!

On a random side note, I assume the Abarth is a DD? How’s it been treating you? I’ve been seriously considering a 500 as a replacement for the Accent when the time comes! :)

I run SanDisks in both my cameras, never had a issue in the two years+ I’ve had them and they record every day/drive.

Never knew that voided the warranty though. I wonder why.

I’ve had that issue, with Costco or BestBuy grade cards failing or getting glitchy within a month or two. About 6 months ago I got a couple of the heavy duty cards, no issues.

That is an interesting factor I did not consider. Quick google and I see what you’re saying. I’m going to have to dig in to that.

IN THE ON COMING LANE! Geeze.

Yes, the Abarth has been my DD for maybe 18 or so months. I absolutely adore the car still. Mechanically, it has not left me stranded or given me issues. I can get the oil changed at jiffy lube since it shares a motor with the Dodge Dart. It takes a pretty decent daily thrashing and doesn’t seem to complain. I have put 18k-ish miles of the total 28k on the clock. I had some non driving related issues with it, documented here: http://twjeffery.kinja.com/fiat-life-1786851918

For the money, it’s a fantastic choice. Depending our your commute the 500e is a stupid cheap way to dip your toe in the electric car pool. I really want one.

Forgot to say something important:
If you buy a fiat, BUY IT USED.

I would probably get a standalone unit because I don’t really trust putting weight on the factory Toyota unit.

The older SanDisks use MLC which is much more durable.

For sure, they are available for stupid cheap used....I’ll prob end up with a Sport or 500T as Abarths are very rare here (there is only one FIAT dealership in my entire province an hour away from me), but I would be fine with that. :)

I suggest the 500t over the sport. It’s essentially an abarth with a muffler and a substantially better turning radius. The first loaner fiat I had was a 500t and I was very happy with how it felt. The sport I had after that was lacking in a lot of ways.

Depends. If it’s the older MLC Ultra cards, you’re probably fine. It’s the newer TLC based ones that are the issue. The cells are just not as durable.
