Takes car to tire shop, they put on worse tires than the crappy old ones already on there

Kinja'd!!!

So I took the Accord to Discount tire to get the Falken tires I ordered mounted. I’d called them the day before and they said both the tires and wheels were in (they didn’t even call me like they said they would) they also said three of the new tires were already mounted on the wheels (I only ordered three wheels, because one was the correct offset)

So I show up and get them put on. When they pulled the car around I was too distracted looking at the new steelies and lug nuts to notice the tires. Anyway, I forgot the coupon for the alignment (different shop) at home, which was on the way. So I stop at my apartment and check out the tires.

And there some generic brand shit and are clearly used! The edge of the sidewall tread was marked up and there were lots of rocks stuck in the tread, way more than my short drive home should’ve gotten.

So I go back and tell them. The guy goes on the computer for a while and says that the Falkens never came in...

Anyway, they say they’ll upgrade me to some Continentals they have. I don’t remember which one’s, I didn’t really care. Just need some serviceable tires. And they’ll install them right now.

They did, which was fine. But it’s pretty fucked to begin with. If they just mounted the old tires by mistake I understand that’s an honest mistake. But they put completely different bullshit ass used tires on there.

Another thing. After ordering the Falkens from them. I went to their website and they said they only made that tire down to 16" (I was ordering 15" wheels) but I figured maybe they do sell 15"s they’re just not on the website. But in retrospect maybe they just planned on putting those bullishit tires on from the beginning.

Unrelated throwback meme

That’s messed up, but at least they made it right, and the Conti’s are a nice upgrade over the Falken’s.

Sort of a similar story - a co-worker just bought a used 2016ish Impala from a franchised dealer (big Chevy store). About a week after buying it, he discovered a tire is losing air, so he puts more in, thinking it’s due to the cold. A week later, same story, then another week. After the third time, he takes it to a tire shop, who pulls the tire and found a plug in it! A poorly installed plug that’s apparently leaking. He went back to the dealer and got a massive run-around, lied to by service and a number of other issues. It took him many visits and a lot of escalation to get the tire replaced. I’d never have thought a dealer would sell a car with a plugged tire, but apparently they do.

Nay, that is too much too ask. Next time I’ll ask to keep the tech on a leash and watch him work.

Oh, plugs are fine of they don’t leak. Of the 6 or so I have had over they years, I never have one cause an issue over the remaining life of the tire. I suppose any plug that leaks is poorly installed, or else is in the shoulder.

Very disappointed that no joe blow tires shop or squicky lube can run an honest operation.

I only go to my local Discount for tires. They remain the only tire shop that employs people not on meth and has not fucked me.

That’s sleazy. Probably hoped you wouldn’t notice and they could make a quick buck off of you. When you noticed they upgraded the tires so you wouldn’t complain. Weird.

A dedicated tire machine is sounding more and more like a good idea.

Incompetence like that is what caused me to do stuff like oil changes and tire rotations myself.

I’ve had situations where shops have over-torqued lug nuts, forgot to tighten them (only hand tightened), cross threaded them, install directional tires in the wrong direction, using an impact gun to tighten an oil pan drain plug, using silicone on oil filter threads and getting other really basic shit wrong. And I don’t trust places enough to use the correct motor oil or install a good quality oil filter.

I only take my car in for stuff I’m not sure about or I don’t have the tools/knowledge to do. But even then, I will often do my own diagnosis and tell the job to do a specific thing and if it fixes the problem, great. If not, THEN I get them to do their own diagnosis.

This is why we need an Oppo commune! So we can have specialized machines like that!

My experience is that with even a small group of gear heads renting a communal garage, tools start mysteriously disappearing. There’s always one amongst the group that ruins it for everyone.
