Kinja'd!!!

So, I received the pleasure of getting a call from FedEx this morning, which was an eye-opening experience into how a company can be, for lack of a better term, completely moronic when it comes to operating hours and their pick up location.

For starters, they called me to let me know that my apartment doesn’t exist. Considering the fact that I’m currently sitting in it, that would be an untruth. In any case, I advised them that yes, my apartment is real, and that the codes for ringing an apartment in my building just requires you to put a 1 before the suite number when dialing (which is pretty clear on the board). Okay, they’d try again, but as a heads up, the package was quite large and couldn’t just be left, it had to be signed for. My girlfriend and I are both out during the day, so I told them to keep it at the depot, and I’ll pick it up.

This brings me to the next point, and my main one: if you’re at work during the times where FedEx is delivering, odds are you’re not going to be able to make it to their depot during their Monday through Friday, nine to five-thirty hours. So, unless you have an excellent boss (like me), or you decide to take a day off, you don’t get your package. Unless, of course, you go on Saturday, during which they’re open from nine to one. Which, considering the fact that most people will only be free during this time, is probably a garbage idea.

In any case, suppose your schedule works out (or you sacrifice a day’s pay, because spoiler warning, this might take a full day) and you’re now able to go to FedEx. Great! Where’s the spot to pick it up?

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, the place is in the middle of nowhere. It’s far enough out that you actually have to drive past the jail ( Motto: Somehow safer than Regina!) , along with pretty much everything else in order to get to it. It’s a twelve minute drive from where I live if a train doesn’t get in the way, or if you don’t have access to a car, it’s an hour bus ride. And I’m on a bus route that goes straight to the downtown bus stop, which means that time might be a lot longer for some people. And the one bus that goes up that way from downtown comes once every half hour during the week, and once an hour on the weekend, so if you’re planning on going on a Saturday, good luck!

In any case, all of this goes to say that FedEx hours are stupid, and while it makes sense for a shipping company to be a little further out from the city centre, come on, FedEx , I don’t want to take a day trip to pick up a package. If you don’t own a car, or can’t manage (or afford) to take time off work, then FedEx might as well print a middle finger on their delivery notice. From this experience, I’ll take Canada Post any day, even if they did take twice as long to ship my moving boxes to me.

Wait, you’re complaining about a 12 minute drive?

It was a gift from my mum, so she was just shipping it home. Granted, when on the phone with FedEx, I should have had it shipped to work. But then the site supervisor would never stop making fun of me for receiving a box from Lego at work.

Oh well, live and learn.

I mean, it’s Saskatoon. Give me half an hour and I can be anywhere in the city from anywhere else.

The main gripe is the fact that unless you have a day off during the week, you’re not going to be able to pick up the package until Saturday. Driving to the north end of town is just extra crap on the pile.

I remember reading that. It’s truly a wonder how things got to this point.

I think the company just grew faster than the corporate structure could adapt to keep things neatly managed.

I agree that the hours suck, but a 12 minute drive is not a real problem. My commute is 12-15 minutes, and I live closer to work that nearly all of my coworkers.

I mean, if I drove to work, it’d probably take me the same amount of time, but that’s because the speed limits are lower heading to work than going to FedEx (there’s a highway I’m just off of that takes me about 50% of the way there).

In any case, it’s just a pain to head up that way because there really isn’t anything else in my day to day life that I need to go up there for (except for work).

Really, I’m just taking this post to complain about everything related to the situation.

I want to feel you, but it is Saskatoon after all. You’re not getting the “A” team by sheer geographical logistics alone. And Fedex is almost always either near the airport or in an industrial park, so convenient for nobody.

Talk DHL and I’ll be there with you.

Can confirm. Went to track a package only to be informed that my address was incorrect and could not be found. Called the next day and had the guy repeat the address on file, it was exact. He didn’t know what was going on, apologized, and said they would try again. At least I got my stuff. This has only happened with FedEx and I had hundreds of packages shipped to this address.

At least in California, you can have a FedEx package transferred to what used to be Kinko’s, I think they’re called FedEx Office now, which are almost always open 24 hours.

Well, I mean FedEx wouldn’t actually exist if it weren’t for a good run in Vegas to make some money for funding before they finally got any momentum back in the 70's. So you might always be a little crazy, with a genesis like that.

I had to pick up my replacement iPod from FedEx (back when they were giving replacements after some of them caught fire). The warehouse is out near the airport - 35 minutes from work at 3 am, but the highway will be at a complete standstill during business hours. Thankfully my boss found out about his free replacement iPod from me so he let me take the time to go pick mine up.

You should be able to have it rerouted to a third party hold location with more convenient hours (independent shipping stores, some drug store chains like Walgreens, etc)

This is weird to me. Where I live, FedEx is far and away the best and most competent shipping company and their pickup locations are open until 7 so you can pickup and dropoff after work. Sounds like FedEx in Canada is a mess.

Right? At one point, I had to go to the FedEx Depot for Miami on a Friday afternoon (to get something I needed for the weekend. Without traffic (never a thing), it’s about a half hour from downtown Miami. That day, it took me a little over an hour and a half... and then they still didn’t want to release the package. It wasn’t great!

Years ago, when I was living in the middle of nowhere, I had to go to the nearest UPS hub to pick up a package. It was 55 miles each way.

FedEx is definitely dumb, but problems like this can mostly be dealt with if you sign up for FedEx Delivery Manager (and its equivalent UPS My Choice).
