My iPhone 6s is starting to wig out on me. It’s been a perfectly fine phone, but I want to go back to Android. I liked that operating system better. I prefer a smaller phone, which was actually the reason I got an iPhone last time, because the good Androids had all gotten so damn bigly. I’m on AT&T, although I would consider switching back to Verizon. I liked their network better, but I’d rather not buy my wife a new phone as well, because her 6s plus is working fine. Budget is $300, although less is better.

Oh yeah, my phone is my only camera. It needs to be decent.

I honestly don’t even know where to begin. I start reading phone reviews, and I just glaze over. Cut through the BS for me Oppo.

Roadmaster for your time. Man I miss that car.

I’m on Verizon and heavily eyeing the Essential Phone. My iPhone 6 is eating crap pretty hardcore but... god damn phones are expensive :(

Have a 6S Plus with a Sony/Zeiss DSC-QX100 1.8 lens (wifi) ... I am the wrong person to ask. Can the 6S be saved? Mine is still running on all cylinders ...

Head over to swappa and see if you can pick up a google pixel. The cameras are amazing.

I honestly have no idea if it can be saved. I’m just sick of having to restart it multiple times a day, sometimes three times in a row.

Find a galaxy s7. Not the plus. The normal s7 isn’t too large. I liked the size of my s6 a lot. Still learning to live with the note 8. Size be damned tho I love this phone.

Did you try backing up to your iTunes, then you full reset your phone and restore your backup.

It won’t back up your music, meaning you have manually put your music back on it.

Recently acquired a Pixel 2, I quite like it. Possibly a Pixel2 2 or a Oneplus 5t as I’ve had the best luck running plain android from google.

No, I haven’t. I’ve got like 6k pictures I have to back up first.

My first smart phone, like 6 years ago, was a google nexus. I was happy with that. I heard the Pixel doesn’t have a headphone jack? That’s a deal breaker for me.

Then I’d say consider the 5t as Oneplus is highly committed to keeping the headphone jack. Maybe a Moto X4 as its a little less expensive but still runs un-skinned android?

I only use my free 5 gigs too, but I back all the photos I don’t need on my phone (iCloud)to my computer and USB hard drive.

I do too ... sometimes. The thing I like least about the iPhone is how hard it is to get pictures off the phone. What was a breeze with Android, is a glitchy multi-step process with the iPhone. So, I don’t do it nearly as often as I should.

There are currently 6647 pictures on my phone, and it has not been backed up in 82 weeks.

I bought a LG G5 about a year ago when it was “new”. Looks like Amazon has new ones for $230. Three cameras (rear wide, rear normal, and front) and a swappable battery (total game changer) makes it a pretty great phone. Sadly looks like the battery kits have become expensive, which is a pain. Otherwise a good phone.

When we got Verizon two months ago, they said the iPhone6s was the oldest Apple phone they’d use if you brought it in, so you should definitely ask that question now before you get fleeced into a new phone (luckily my wife wanted a new phone and upgraded from her 5 to her 7).

My take: the Samsung S7 is just a better 6 with an equally unimpressive battery life. Great camera, easy to use. I didn’t really love the 6, but I’m coming around on the 7.

Holy bezeesus. Ok, we can fix this. First, do you have a gmail account, or a google account of any kind? If so, go to the app store, and get the google photos app, and set it to backup all your photos, for free, at high quality. There is some compression involved, but it’s not bad, really. With 6k photos, this will take some time. Do it over the holiday.

If you don’t, then set up a free gmail account, and back up all your photos to google. Alternatively, you can sign in to your amazon account with amazon photos and a prime membership, also an app, you can back up everything there, too. I actually suggest doing both services, and making sure to carry them to your next phone.

Next step, remove anything apple from your life.

Then go buy a Google Pixel 1.

It’s hard not to say “just go galaxy” since they’re the most ubiquitous androids out there, and I’ve bought several iterations for my wife over the years. I myself am a Windows Phone/Mobile guy, especially because they’re one of the few phones that have actual physical camera buttons, and can launch the camera from being locked. They’re not poplular by any means, but I wouldn’t use anything else.

That said, given your budget, if you want to get new instead of used, maybe have a look at the Alcatel Idol and an unlocked Nokia 6. The Nokia has a good camera and thoughtful design elements, even if it’s almost anonymous as a result. The Alcatel is a decent all-around phone, and while their cameras aren’t up to the same level as Microsoft/Nokia or Samsung’s finest, it’d be a good in-between phone while you wait to see if you and your wife switch carriers.

Speaking of switching carriers, check out T-Mobile. Avoid sprint.

I will look at both of those, thanks. T-Mobile’s network is super spotty in the rural areas I travel through. I had Sprint for years, never again. Their network was horrible and their customer service was downright hostile.

I set it up on my in-laws’ iphones, because they’re cheap, and bought 16 gb models, and then had grandkids, and proceeded to take pictures of said grandkids, and never backed anything up. Sigh...

Just a couple notes. Like I said, it’ll take about forever, so be prepared for that. Make sure you disable cellular data usage for the google photos app, and it’ll just churn along when you’re on WiFi. You can pause the backup within the app, too, so maybe plug the phone in and resume at night, that kind of thing. Unless you have an unlimited data plan, then just leave it.

I’m at home today, so I’ve got it plugged in on my kitchen counter chugging through it on WiFi. When I first started it, there were something like 7400 items to back up. 6,6XX to go still. How do I set it to not use my data when I leave the house? I have the absolute lowest data plan, because we never use more than a gig of data in a month.

Nice!

If you go to settings, there should be a main tab for “Cellular Data”, usually under bluetooth and WiFi. Click in there, and there should be sliders for every app to allow them to use cell data or not. just slide it off, and you’ll be good to go!

That’s what a dongle is for.

No google treble is a dealbreaker for me. It’s why Android is still an unimitigated shitshow of shame.

Yeah, sprint’s awful. The attempts for T-Mobile to just acquire them should be allowed, if only to put them out of their misery. I’d love to root for them since they’re based out of the Midwest (albeit owned by Japanese company Softbank), but they prove time and time again they’re not worthwhile.

If you feel adventurous and have a Microsoft Store nearby, check out a Windows-running phone. Except apps, they don’t give up anything to Android or apple, and have some advantages beyond the two-headed mobile monopoly.

A buddy of mine has a Windows phone and long bed it. I played around with it a bit and got annoyed. I’m sure I could get used to it, but I liked Android when I had it. I think I’m going to order an LG Moto G5.
