Kinja'd!!!

Now the Subaru is registered and I no longer feel sketched out that I am driving around in a car that still has someone elses plates and registration attached to it. It is very odd how California cars just keep the plates, it makes me wonder that if someone stole the car and robbed a bank, wouldnt the plates say the PO was the owner so they would just go arrest him? Sure would be an unfortunate circumstance. But anyways, now its all settled and the car is legally mine!

Thankfully I was able to make an appointment so I had just a short wait and all of the paperwork went through smoothly and quickly. Plus I got to enjoy driving the STi some more in daylight which was nice. Some lovely windows down weather with some tunes. It is tough adjusting to having no AUX port or Bluetooth like I have in my Miata but at least the 6 CD changer in the OEM headunit seems to work decently.

My tires are officially on order as well, Falken 615k+ from America’s Tire (Discount Tire for the rest of the country) for an installed price of $600 for the set. Those should be arriving tomorrow and hopefully I can get them installed Saturday, although who knows with the holiday in the way.

Next on the list will be to continue shopping for another set of wheels, snow tires, a roof rack setup, a new radio, and also working on the Miata. I would like to solve the 1 qt/1200 mile oil loss, the crashy rear shocks, screeching brakes, and eventually paint.

How did you end up with a car with the old plates? In Michigan you keep your plates and never sell a car with your plate still attached.

Here in the U.K. The plates stay with the car.

When you sell the car it’s document, V5, gets partitioned, one part gets filled out by the previous owner and posted to the DVLC (U.K. DMV), the new owner fills out there section to acknowledge they are the new owner, this is also posted to the DVLC, in due course the new owner will receive a new full V5 stating the new owner as the registered keeper.

If there is a gap in the paperwork and the car is stolen and used for a bank robbery, the police would go to the previous registered keeper, who will state when it was sold and who the new owner is. But also more than likely the police would of been notified by the new owner that the car has been stolen and confirm they are the new registered keeper and if necessary cross check it with the prvious owner.

Plates stay with the car in California. You can only transfer custom plates between cars.

To my knowledge, that’s how it’s supposed to work in California. There is no guarantee that the new owner will actually register the car in their name so it’s important to submit your release of ownership to the DMV when selling so you’re not on the hook for parking tickets or tolls.

Over here the previous owner fills out their part of the form stating they sold it and who to. The new owner fills their bit to inform and also confirm new ownership. If they fail to then the DVLC can chase them up. Also now with the no transfer of road tax, the previous owner would receive a refund on any whole months remaining, it’d mean the new owner is driving without road tax, yet a further offence that could see the car impounded or crushed.

Well yeah that works in theory but I am thinking that cops in the US are more of the “shoot first ask questions later type” so that’s why just some “questioning” by the police is something I want to always avoid.

Thats definitely how it is supposed to work but I am used to Jersey where you remove the plates when you sell the car. And unless you meet at the DMV, there is no legal way to drive the car there to register it after purchase. Generally I just drive with no plates if its not too far, but its definitely not legal that way.

Exactly, this is why that concept was foreign to me! But yeah its supposed to be that way here.

If the car was unregistered for a few years and then you went and got it registered again, would you have to pay for all of the skipped years to make it legal? I know some places force you to do that.

Granted, here in the U.K. policing is very different to how it’s done in the U.S.

Also there are so many cameras on motorways and in police cars that the ANPR facility would highlight it as a target vehicle for questioning.

When you sell the car you can keep or leave the plates on. Doesn’t matter

You can keep any plates, just most people don’t unless they are custom.

That’s interesting, here in Michigan the Secretary of State (DMV to most other states) specifically directs us to not let a sold car leave with our plates. But here, the new owner can drive the car back home, or to the SOS office without tags, as long as they have the signed title in hand.

Well if I was to sell my car and keep my plates, they could still drive it with insurance and bill of sale and/or title.
