Does it really take 45min to press a ball joint into a control arm? I’ve been calling around and everyone want’s $50 for it. One shop said it takes 45min to do. But I’m pretty sure that’s bullshit. In WA there was a NAPA that would do the exact same thing for $15 and it took them like 10 minutes.

As for why I need a ball joint pressed in. I got the second control arm off the car, but one of the bushings is cattywompous and the bolt won’t go through. Since the bushings are good on the old one I just bought a ball joint from Autozone and am looking for someone to press it in.

Update Edit: Nvm I’m stupid. The new one’s are like that too. I just didn’t notice until I looked at the old one’s.

Go to Harbor Freight and buy your own 20 ton hydraulic press. It’ll pay for itself after like 4 ball joints.

Could be worse... Just had to replace the entire control arms on the a4 because the bushings aren’t replaceable. 750 bucks later. You know its bad when the mechanic sighs before explaining what they had to do

Nothing at a shop takes less than half an hour’s worth of labor.

~$100 an hour, half an hour, $50.

Except oil changes and tire plugs, anyways.

Do they know you’re JUST bringing an arm, or the whole car to press it out? If its the latter figure disassembly, walking to the press, re-installation, coffee break, talking on the phone, paperwork, etc.

45 minutes? Pretty sure when the last time I did ball joints (about 14 years ago), it took me 3 days, so 45 minutes doesn’t sound too bad

If it doesn’t break itself first (according to the reviews)...

45 min could be a worst-case scenario estimate. Don’t want to promise a 10 min job sight-unseen.

Maybe. I wound up bringing it to one of those places that quoted me $50 and they ended up only charging me $40. I’m about to make a post that’ll include it.

yeah I told them I already had the arm out and I already had the new ball joint. They ended up only charging me $40. But I think that was because it took them almost an hour to get around to it. But I’ll take it!

Because they hear “how back could it be?” about 20 times a day.

While having a hydraulic press around would be great, they are kinda expensive (and take up some floor space). For the home-gamer, I suggest this:

$60 on sale, and it also will press apart U-joints. You can use it without removing the control arm from the car, which saves time and has less impact on the alignment.
