Although it wouldn’t work, because like everything else. A small portion of the population would fuck it up for everyone else.

So at intersections that don’t see a ton of traffic at certain times during the day. You have it stay green for the heavier/faster traffic and you have a flashing yellow or some other color (blue obviously wouldn’t be a good pick, bc of blue/green color blind people, but you get the idea.) That basically means it’s now a yield sign.

Then you put sensors about 3 or 4 car lengths back. So that if traffic backs up that far it can give the primary street a red and those guys a green.

Maybe for holidays we use red green and purple lights...

Eh. If you have a green, drivers have been trained to believe they have the right of way. If you have someone with a flashing yellow at a cross-intersection, you’d not anticipate them pulling out. The “green” would have to be different too (maybe flashing), to let drivers know that, while they have right of way, other drivers could be pulling out to cross or turn left in front of them.

Like you said, though, too many people would screw it up so it wouldn’t work.

I’ve seen something similar where after a certain time of night the lights on the main street all flash yellow while the intersecting streets flash red.

Fun stop light fact!

During the Chinese Cultural Revolution, some Red Guards thought that a red light should indicate go , as red is the color of the Revolution. Thankfully, they were told that a red light for stop was visible from afar in light or darkness, not a capitalist plot to discredit communism.

Nah, do what Detroit does. Flashing yellow for the main road and flashing red for the minor road through the night. Right turns and U-turns instead of left turns.

Now tweak it to include straight-through traffic, so that traffic never goes straight through unless traffic is so heavy that you can’t get in and make it across to the u-turn lane, in which case a sensor would pick up several cars waiting for a designated length of time. In that situation (say 3-4 cars for 30-40 seconds) the light would change and permit straight through traffic.

This basically already exists on country roads. The major road has a flashing yellow signifying to use caution and not stop, while the side road has a flashing red acting as a stop sign and to proceed when traffic is clear.

Well yeah, I mean if there’s zero traffic, then the whole safety aspect is moot, because you’re stopping for nothing but the sign(al).

This goes for stop signs as well as traffic signals. If everyone just paid attention and respected right-of-way, we shouldn’t always need to come to a full and complete stop. This is why I like roundabouts so much.

Along the lines of what you’re suggesting, I’ve seen some residential streets where there is no signage whatsoever for one street, while the street crossing it has a yield sign. So the slightly more “main” street has priority, but the intersection has no stop signs or traffic signals. Cross-traffic may proceed, but only if the way is clear. They don’t necessarily have to stop, not unless there’s another car there to claim right-of-way. And you know what, it works.

Potentially it could work for busier streets too, but that’ll never happen until drivers get with the friggin’ program and respect the rules of the road.

Lots of intersections near me function normally all day but at night the main road becomes flashing yellow and the side road is flashing red

That’d work too. I forgot flashing red makes it a stop sign.

I think you mean red/green color blindness. So yes color blind people have to judge red or green based on position already. The color blindness with blue is blue/yellow, and it is pretty rare in comparison to red/green.
