Kinja'd!!!

C’mon, flashing lights aren’t that hard to see.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

We REALLY want people to stop for school buses. We have tried to make this happen in multiple ways and have so far been unsuccessful in getting some people to cooperate. We hope this video makes a difference.

That police department has *waaaaayyyyy* too many unmarked vehicles. That screams that they are not there to protect and serve but make money. Also, 4+1 lane hgihway and they do this... cmon.

Just today I watched a guy run a red on Southfield right past an Allen Park officer who was stopped for the light. I guess some drivers around here really don’t see the light(s) unless they’re red and blue?

I actually found this video a little confusing. I didn’t realize traffic on the opposite side of the street had to stop.

Looks like I’m right about that in cali:

Drivers in California do not have to stop on any highway that is divided or is multi-lane (2 or more lanes of travel in each direction) when traveling in the opposite direction. [12] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/School_bus_traffic_stop_laws

Says the police department with 4-6 unmarked vehicles ... This is why we have trust issues with t he police these days.

This video doesn’t spell it out, and instead errs on the side of (simplified but ignorant) safety. In Michigan, we actually don’t have to stop if the bus is on the other side of a divided highway. So if there is a curb, ditch, barrier, or other physical impediment separating forward lanes from oncoming traffic, that is considered to be enough of a safety margin to keep half of that road’s traffic moving. But a center turn lane is not enough to qualify for this, and stopping becomes mandatory so long as the bus’s red lights are flashing.

According to the Michigan State Police you have to stop unless it’s a divided highway. This road has crosswalks a little further down.

It’s vitally important that everyone stop in both directions when a bus opens that door because a kid may be running to or from from either side of the street, and they don’t have the best judgement. No one wants to kill a little kid just to save a few seconds.

Depending on the size of the town, IDK if that’s a lot of unmarked cars or not - but the point of the law is that kids have a tendency to run across streets without looking, so if state law requires you to stop, ya gotta stop.

Looks like 3 unmarked cars in the vid, town population of 81,000.

This is a wonderful thing. I wish more towns would spend their time enforcing school bus laws instead of the stupid speed limit speed traps. Yeah I get it, speeding is dangerous too, but this is a much more serious issue. It is less profitable to enforce school bus passing laws but certainly more important.

Same should go for KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS laws and using cell phones while driving and coming to a complete stop at signs and lights. Those are major safety problems for everyone. And I am happy to see those aggressively enforced by the police.

There were 3 Explorers and at least 1 Taurus. My city has 35,000 people and 1 unmarked car. I still hate it. There should be no such thing as an unmarked car in my opinion.

Not completely sure, but I thought I saw 5 cars total, 1 of which was marked. That does seem like an excessive number of unmarked cars to me, although they’re easy to spot.

That road is not divided though, it makes sense when there is a big concrete wall in the middle to allow traffic to continue. Its just like people “chasing the yellow light” though, a red light is a red light. WAYYYY too many people just charge right through a solid red light. There is no point in rushing to save a couple of seconds.

Any unmarked cars is too many. Also, if a school bus is dropping off kids on a 4 lane highway they have problems in the transportation department. There are very few instances that they should be dropping kids off in that spot, and there is no way a kid should cross a 4lane street.

I’m with you on the unmarked cars, but that’s not right about dropping kids on a 4 lane road (it’s not a highway).

Those kids were probably being picked up/dropped off in front of their own house.

The way that they set up the routes, the kids don’t have to cross that 4 lane road - they would go up and back if there were kids on both sides of the road.

However, you never know when a kid will decide on their own to cross over, or get off the bus early to avoid the up and back— hence the law (which does vary from state to state).

A town I drive through everyday just purchased a new fleet of Explorers. Their “marked” units are solid black, with flat black lettering.

Which is even worse than our county Sherrif’s color scheme of dark blue squad cars with medium blue lettering.

Have you seen Addison’s new police cars? Their “marked” units are solid black, with flat black lettering.

That’s just flipping silly. I haven’t seen them - Addison isn’t far, but I don’t usually find myself passing through there (except on 290/355).

My town and the town next door (Clarendon Hills/Westmont) are seemingly all Explorers/Tauruses now, and CH has at least 1 Explorer that looks exactly like the ones in the video above - although I *think* that might be a Fire Department car.

I drive through Addison just about every day. They’re totally just trying to raise more revenue with that “color” scheme.

Seriously you have to stop if you are going the opposite direction on a multi lane road? that seems a bit overkill

Any unmarked cars is too many.

why? they’re there to enforce the law. not make people behave during the 0.5% of the time they know a cop is watching them.

Seriously you have to stop if you are going the opposite direction on a multi lane road? that seems a bit overkill

In most states, on an undivided road/highway, traffic stops in both directions. Kids can be crossing the street to get on/off the bus.

If the highway is divided (median, barriers, fences, etc.), then it is impractical (or impossible) for the kids to cross the road. Thus the opposing traffic is not required to stop (in most jurisdictions).
