Looks like we can add Tesla to the list of American manufacturers making up big numbers

1.9s to 100km/hr? Like Hennessey (not Vector lol), maybe they’ll do it. But why make an announcement based on hopes and dreams?

Kinja'd!!!

It’s far more impressive to drop the news when you’ve got proof of the car doing it. More than just CGI anyway.

At least it’s a targa. Even if it looks like one of those Lotus Lies created by Dany “confirmed asshole” Bahar.

Because that’s all they have left.

They’ve so far backed up their performance claims for all their other vehicles, despite how outlandish they sounded at the time. That, plus the fact that the technology is there for everything they said to be possible, makes me pretty confident that this is more than just “making up numbers”

That was impressive CGI they were giving people o-74mph rides in at the reveal.

TEN THOUSAND NEWTON METRES OF TORQUE

If it doesn’t do 2.5 seconds to 100kmh while towing a boat I want a refund.

It looks like the prototypes can already very much do it, based on the onboard videos floating around. Seems very feasible, given the specs.

I mean they don’t show a speedometer but it’s definitely fast:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

For these runs I think they were doing 0-~80 mph, and it’s not long at all before they start breaking.

As stupid and meta as this sounds, what does it mean? This is the manifestation of a bench racer’s dream gone wild. It’s literally a sports car made by someone who doesn’t understand cars. And like the Model S, I doubt this thing will be able to make it one lap around a race track without going into limp dick mode

I think a lot of sports cars are like that these days. Made to hit big numbers on paper because the rich people who can afford them aren’t car people and want big numbers. Meanwhile, Lotus is dying.

In that sense, this is sort of the king of them all. Those numbers are pretty good. If it ever hits them.

Of course it’s fast. All the Teslas are fast! Still big claims, it’s hard to see that 0.4 second difference with my eyes.

And Hennessey have built the super-quick Venom. But still! They’ve achieved something Koenigsegg couldn’t with the Regera and the One:1? I’ll believe it when it’s proven.

Truth. It’s easy to doubt on a company, but we don’t have access to their research. Not to mention that Ludicrous mode on the P90 already does 0-60 in 2.6 seconds (which blew everyone’s minds before). For a site that loves cars, I always kind of feel like Jalopnik (and occasionally Oppo) wants to see car companies fail.

Which is strange, considering Tesla—or more specifically, Elon—is so insistent on adding all these little quirks and inside jokes that enthusiasts generally go crazy over.

“maximum plaid?”

The Model X Christmas jingle door thingy?

This is an American company, making eye-wateringly fast vehicles with relatively new tech and pushing design boundaries. I hate using tech-company jargon when talking about Tesla, but they’ve been industry-disruptors in a way that I can’t recall ever seeing in the automotive world. And despite not being “performance cars” they have wonderful handling and braking, along with the aforementioned acceleration. Seems like exactly what we should like to see instead of rav4's, Q5's, etc.

I see Tesla as a company to root for. It’s doing things that I—as an enthusiast—want to see done. It’s pushing boundaries, while throwing in dumb features just for fun, which is a breath of fresh air in the designed-by-committee business model of most major auto corporations. And now with the roadster they’re saying they have at least a passing interest in performance vehicles. As far as Koenigsegg... Making a car accelerate quickly is much more simple than making a car capable of breaking track records. Especially with electric power.

For what it’s worth I daily drive a track prepped Miata many miles a day with harness, cage, and components that have all been designed and tested almost exclusively on a racetrack. I’m very much a fan of the Lotus-style cars but I also love that Tesla is bringing us a new type of driving experience to play around with

Some sports cars do retain a sense of character and purpose though even as they get stupidly fast. Perfect example of this is the 911. C2S PDK is a cold day away from running 10s, but it still sounds good and is fun at low speeds. Seems like the only Tesla videos I see are Ludicrous Mode reaction videos, Autopilot trickery and drag racing. There has to be more to sports and performance cars.

You need to wake up to the instant torque of electric. Crazy low 0-60 times are the realm of electric cars.

Electric RC makes nitro RC look ridiculously quaint and slow. The acceleration of an electric 1/8th scale with some low-turn mod motor is absolutely unreal. Frighteningly unreal. If you’ve never seen an indoor race of these things in person (particularly pro level racing), you really should make a point to see it. It is positively terrifying.

I’m pretty sure the stated 10 thousand is off by a factor of 10.
That’s 10 times more than the P100D

That’s nearly twice as much as the Honeywell AGT 1500 that’s IN THE M1 ABRAMS

I’m with you. Pushing boundaries is good. Electric cars were making slow, pathetic progress for years until Tesla came in and did something GM/Toyota with all their resources couldn’t do.

And the fun features are nice too :)

There has to be more. Definitely.

Some retain character, and lately some cars have been deliberately trying to do that better. Cars that aren’t the Nissan GT-R.

But Tesla aren’t doing it better.

I understand how it works, but it’s still a big claim to say your car accelerates faster than everything else. Until you’ve got the proof.

I dunno, maybe they’ll add more cooling to this one, as it’s got smaller frontal area, and enough battery that a bit more radiator opening won’t hurt range too much.

(That’s the reason the Model S goes into limp mode, insufficient cooling.)

Still, it’s definitely a straight-line car, because anything that weighs in the ballpark of 5000 pounds (and I’m predicting based on the battery and the tire load ratings that that’s where it is) ain’t gonna handle worth shit.

They don’t need proof, it’s scientifically possible.

Internal combustion engines are really inefficient, it should be no surprise that an electric car could out-accelerate even ridiculous internal combustion vehicles.

It’s ultimately limited to battery weight, energy density, and the ability to put the power down to the ground (tires, friction, etc).

Kinja'd!!! "Nauraushaun" (nauraushaun12)
11/21/2017 at 15:46, STARS: 0

It’s scientifically possible for a lot of things to happen that haven’t happened. It was scientifically possible to create all the cars we have today, 100 years ago.

I don’t care what’s possible, I care what Tesla are going to bring to market. 1.9 seconds is a big claim that’s so far unfulfilled.
