Kinja'd!!!

I may re-engineer this with a lid that opens but for tomorrow, when we drive 500 miles to Southernmost California, I will have a place to rest my arm.

I kind of want to do something like this for my Sti. While it has a nice armrest pad on the center console, its just far too low for me to rest my arm on without straining my shoulder. Guess it was designed for shorter people. Although my plan was just to stick a big pad on the console and call it a day. This seems pretty neat though.

This one straddles the existing center thingie and actually sits on the floor of the car. And thanks for the compliment. I’ll apply some finish to it when I get home from Southern California. (Boy, I dislike driving through Los Angeles...)

The graininess in that one pic makes it look like MDF, but nope. This is Norm AF*.

Classy.

*surely any woodworker understands the term I just coined

No pad? I like it, either way

Yes driving in Los Angeles proper is a special kind of hell. I avoid that at all costs lol. But boy am I enjoying the canyons around here! The amount of crazy shit I see never ceases to amaze me. Like I just dont understand how so many accidents happen on the freeway, people are stupid. Glad to have my dash cam now.

And yeah I love things like that which seem overdone but totally are useful in the end. Especially fitting in a base model car like that. I always find that the lack of a center armrest is the biggest cheaping out any car manufacturer can do that pisses me off to no end.

It’ll get one eventually. This may wind up having been a prototype. Needed something for the trip tomorrow...

Thanks. LA is a mess. I’d like for this thing to have some storage accommodation, but keep it simple...

There are two more of them further forward. And the cups, when held in the olders, made lousy armrests.

From one who would know. Thank you. I could give it a hinged lid, or whatever, but lots more work and this was quick. This is the kind of woodworking that I like to do: highly functional, as elegant as possible, and every effort to make everything smooth, straight, square and even. And always sanded. This will get a few coats of a satin water-based Zar spar varnish once we return from downstate.

Speaking of downstate, are you IL or IN?

Eh, then it just becomes a holder of crap that rattles around in it. I say finish it off and leave it.

I’m in Illinois, in the suburbs of Chicago.

OOO thats awesome. I have to find some information about it before I drop $100 on it. But thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I also found that tilting my seat back and lowering it helped. But I prefer to drive a bit more upright to have a better control around turns.

That whole center area is hollow right? Shouldnt be too hard to create a hinged door for the lid.

Actually that pic on the Subaru parts site is for the current WRX but that part number is the right one for your car. This is what the extension for your car looks like:

These are the best in-car pics I could find, although this person added leather with red stitching.

Oh okay that is awesome, plus the added bonus of extra storage space. I will definitely get one of those right away. I am going to find out if I can get one locally from a Subaru dealer to avoid paying for shipping. But otherwise that one you found will surely work. Thanks for the help!
