So I gather this has been a thing for the last couple days, but all of a sudden the government and media have a bug up their collective rears about the number of cars with Takata airbags still on the road, and the thrust of everything I’ve seen so far leads one to think it’s the drivers’ fault. As I understand it, Takata was having trouble manufacturing enough replacements before filing bankruptcy, and it’s not gotten any better. My uncle’s Merc was recalled, but he was told they were concentrating on more humid states first, and he’s been on a wait list for at least a year now. Am I wrong in thinking this new push is mis-targeted?

I went through the whole “you’re in a low humidity state” rigmarole with BMW until I finally got mine replaced. But there are just as many people who get a recall notice and don’t pay attention.

We’ve had every airbag available for every FCA vehicle on the recall list for MONTHS.
But still the people won’t come in.
FCA is now offering Uber/Lyft rides for customers to bring the cars and trucks in.
I think most of them won’t run.
I can’t wait till Trump tells dealers to make house calls to replace Takata airbags.

Shit. I’ve been told not to schedule either of my cars yet from my recall notice, because the new parts won’t be ready until “at least Spring 2018".

Ha, just got off the phone with the ford dealer. My audi had the parts available 6 months ago, but ford it still waiting for some reason??

Not entirely there is actually a substantial wait time for BMWs because they need to order the part from the main facility where they are stored. I had to initiate the recall instead of them informing me about it the last time I had it in for servicing. The ball is being dropped on both sides. But at least I don’t have a hand grenade in the car anymore.

I’ve been waiting over almost two years for one for my wifes Ford Edge. I’m close to writing some politicians about Ford dragging heals on forcing Takata to make enough. My Audi was repaired with a non-Takata replacement because the manufacturer saw what was happening and sought one of the old suppliers to make a safer replacement in a timely manner. I’m guessing Audi was more concerned with reputation and customer safety than some other auto makers.

That’s higher than I expected considering parts shortages and general laziness of owners to do recalls.
So many millions of cars are involved its never going to be 100%.
Side effect: Salvage yards are getting paid to turn in defective takata inflators to keep them from being reused. Profit!
