I’d like to install a few surveillance cameras at my home. Outdoor and POE, but not like Fort Knox expensive. Any experience or suggestions?

Amcrest and Zmodo make good entry level stuff. Cameras are around $100/each an NVR will run you about the same. Some NVRs have POE ports but most of the cheaper ones require a separate POE Switch.

CohuHD if you want pan/tilt/zoom ability but you’re going to pay. It may be overkill however as they get pricey.

I was thinking about getting a wilderness cam for my backyard. Something or someone’s been pooping in it.

Get something with real resolution. I’m TIRED of seeing grainy-ass videos with “ID this person/car” because people/stores be too cheap/lazy to install something with real resolution
I think business insurance should require at LEAST 480p for any theft/shoplifting claims to be paid.

No idea really but a lot of my clients use nest brand. Many have ring doorbells too. Keep an eye on woot.com. They often have them on sale 4-8 camera systems for what seems like a reasonable price

I recently installed four outdoor ReoLink cameras, as well as an indoor pan/tilt.
2560x1440 and the PoE works with standard routers. The turret cams are a little bigger than I’d like, and the hole you have to drill is big (you don’t just fish CAT5/6, you have to have a ~1" hole to fit their silly dongle through). But, they are down to ~$65 each for the standard turret/bullet cams and the included software can record/monitor fairly well. They include decent infrared illuminators.
I haven’t installed the last one (front door) since I’m not sure if I want to go with something smaller or not. But overall I’m very happy, especially considering the price. They seem to be well made, but I haven’t been through a winter yet.

If you’re planning on setting alerts/alarms, the built-in software is triggered by trees/shadows even on the lowest setting. At night, bugs attracted to the IR will set it off. You’ll want to mount a separate IR illuminator away from the camera (an issue common w/most cameras).

I started with Foscam stuff and moved onto Amcrest. I really like Amcrest. It’s affordable and better quality. Their ebay store has great deals on “refurbs” and they do best offer and lots of auctions. I can’t speak for the built-in software because I’ve always used a dedicated PC w/ Blue Iris. I prefer to use POE and have a dedicated switch for it. It’s more upfront cost but you eliminate the use of injectors and wall warts everywhere. You can also use a non-POE device on the other end if you get a POE-splitter. TP-Link sells a 4-port POE switch for about $40.

Also keep in mind that cheap Cat5e is usually mostly aluminum wire coated in copper. It’s not recommended for POE service but will work...I kind of view it like the homes that used to be wired with aluminum...The good stuff costs more but it’s easier to work with and less likely to break went bent. Less likely to catch on fire too...
