What do you do when the front diff of your f150 won’t lock due to something wrong with the stupid vacuum actuator but you need 4x4? Zip tie it always locked. RIP fuel economy.

Wait, you are running 4wd all the time now...in the dry?

I think it locks at the transfer case too - this is just a disconnect for the axle shafts from the carrier. Again, *I think*.

In that case its not so bad, like leaving your hubs in, but if not...

Nah, the transfer case works fine. This just locks the front axles to the diff.

This isn’t the t-case. That works fine. What doesn’t work is the vacuum stupidity to lock the front axles to the dif. So now it just spins the front driveshaft all the time. No biggie. Jeeps are like this stock. Slight fuel economy hit but whatever.

Gotcha. Well then, carry on. I always thought front axle disconnects were weird, but hey...they seem to mostly work.

It’s a ton of complexity and things to break for such a minor little gain. Why not make it a pull-cable? Why is it an electric solenoid, then a bunch of brittle plastic vacuum line, then a brittle rubber actuator that depends on a metal linkage *exposed to the elements* to move perfectly freely?

It’s hard to tell what I am looking at from this picture, but does that crack in the boot have anything to do with vacuum leak?

Couldn’t tell ya, both my cars have hard cables to the transfer case and a big beefy lever you push or pull. There are kits for some cars to replace the actuators with cable pulls, but not all. In fact there is a kit for my truck that replaces the electric actuator for the lockers with cables and levers. I guess they can go bad but so far so good for me.

Nah. The diaphragm is totally encased in the metal cylinder to the right.

Yup. There’s a $130 kit for this truck to give it a nice lever on the underside of the dash. Don’t think I can convince my boss though..

ok.... so if you hooked up a good hose with a vacuum, do it activate?

Haven’t been able to get the old one off. It’s the stupid ford semi-hardline vacuum hoses.
