hahaha, I have to say that, as a french, I’m being the smug asshole I’m supposed to be in such circumstance and I watch the whole thing from afar with a smile mixed with a bit of an “oh shit what the fuck are they doing??” in it... After watching the whole Brexit debacle, I’m borderline starting to think those royalist numb nuts we have in France aren’t totally wrong: Giving the masses the power to determine themselves does indeed lead to crazy shit... (I don’t REALLY think that huh? It’s a joke).

Brits really shot themselves in the foot on that one. I still can’t wrap my head over such a dumb decision and what motivated it...

As an American who has tried to follow the impacts of Brexit, I have no clue what the actual impacts are. I know the UK needs to renegotiate trade and travel with the EU, but I no nothing else. Everything else I read is just screaming and crying that it was a bad idea with no facts attached.

I guess the thing of note is that the UK’s economy is hugely reliant on trade with the EU, so absence of a trade deal or a bad one could be catastrophic. Add to that the fact that London is the Banking capital of Europe, and Brexit will certainly have a negative impact (nobody knows how negative) on the City...

Oh and the UK has kept it’s own currency, which means that it doesn’t have some of the problems the Euro does, but also that if the country’s outlook worsens, YOU get inflation, YOU get inflation... EEEVERYBODY GETS INFLATION!!!!

I’m an American myself, but as citizenlambda said, a lot of it is how tightly-connected the UK’s economy is to the EU economy.

And, how it relates to cars is... a lot  of automotive factories are in the UK partially due to its access to the European market - Ford (OK, that’s also for historical reasons that date back to when Ford actually had a UK-specific division), Toyota, Honda, and Nissan all come to mind. If a trade deal isn’t made, those factories will likely end up shutting down (as EU member states will charge full tariffs on UK-produced cars, and the UK isn’t big enough to sustain demand for those cars on its own). It is worth noting that the UK could always choose to have lower tariffs on imported cars, though, so the scenario posted in the joke image of the UK car market being entirely 1980s British Leyland shitboxes is unlikely.

There’s also some incredibly nasty issues to deal with around Ireland - basically, Ireland remains an EU member, Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and it’s seen of critical importance that Ireland and Northern Ireland have frictionless trade and movement, yet Northern Ireland needs to have frictionless trade and movement with the rest of the UK - without those two things, you could very easily end up getting civil war in Northern Ireland, between parties loyal to Ireland, and parties loyal to the UK (which has happened before, and in living memory for many people).

Note that all of this is in the context of the UK specifically wanting to prevent movement from the EU into the UK, and it’s impossible for the UK to get that while satisfying the previous two conditions. (There’s actually some belief lately that the agreements to broker Northern Irish peace make Brexit itself illegal...)

Not just trade and travel with the EU, but trade and travel with the rest of the world as their current agreements were made through the EU. There’s been quite a bit of analysis regarding the impacts, so if you really have been following it, then you might want to switch up your news sources.

UK politics is ridiculous. Labour should love Margret Thatcher for closing all the polluting coal mines.
