Just Enough Truck

I’m back in Oklahoma to deal with the last of my mom’s estate which includes this little Nissan Hardbody. It’s been sitting for several months, so I took it out for some dinner. I came outside to find this.

Kinja'd!!!

These two couldn’t be more different and still be called trucks.

The little truck has lots of little problems, but still runs and drives like a champ. The short list includes a broken speedometer (the needle fell off), debris in the a/c blower, the a/c has a leak and doesn’t cool, both window tracks need new felt so the windows go up and down without getting stuck, it desperately needs a new gasket around the windshield, the driver’s door lock needs to be adjusted so it can be locked/unlocked with the key, the dash pad needs to be replaced, it has hail damage, and it desperately needs to be repainted.

But it still runs and drives! It’s a neat little truck and I wish I could take it home, but there’s no room in our driveway for a fifth vehicle. I’ll be sad to see it go.

Make room for it. Boom. Problem solved. Next question!

It isn’t BaT worthy.

We have a need for three daily drivers (teenagers in the house) and I already have one reminder sitting in the driveway (which my wife hates). A fifth is out of the question.

Really?

I understand that it is not really that rare or valuable. But seeing that BaT has people who love this, maybe that site will offer better bids? (Disclaimer:I have never used BaT to buy or sell a car, so its just an idea.)

Market in really good shape is about $1,000. If you’re lucky. It just isn’t worth the hassle of hauling it back to Louisiana (at a cost of $300 - $500), listing it, then dealing with bidders, fees, etc.

I’m just taking it to my uncle’s place. He will either buy it from me or sell it for a cut of the profit. I’m not expecting much.

Little trucks are the best. My first car (and first manual) was a ‘96 Toyota Tacoma. It was actually a hand me down from my parents, who bought it when new, so I had a lot of history with that truck. I still miss it, but I, like you, had no space or time for it. Watching it drive away sucked.

When I got my license in ‘97, the local dealer was advertising brand new hardbodies for $7800. I had half of that saved up, but couldn’t convince my dad to help me with the other half in any way.

Instead I blew my savings buying my parents ‘89 Oldsmobile Toronado Trofeo, which promptly fell apart in grand fashion. Between what I spent buying it, and what we both spent fixing it over the next three years (Dad paid half of the repairs, because he felt bad for making me buy that car), we could’ve paid cash for the new truck. Instead I had a total beater that ended up getting junked.

Oh, I had no idea that’s what the market rate is for these....

I thought mini trucks are being bought up by enthusiasts for a decent amount these days. Thanks for clarifying.

That’s a bummer. Hindsight is always a good teacher. On the upside, you gained a lot of experience making repairs which you wouldn’t have had with a brand-new truck.

My first truck was an ‘83 hand-me-down Mazda. This Nissan was the one I really wanted. Even though it doesn’t compare to modern machinery, it’s still a hoot to drive. Even so, I miss my old truck. It was in pretty good shape when it was totaled (someone pulled out in front of me).

It was a learning experience for sure, both for me and for my parents. When my sister got her license six years later, they helped her buy a cheap new car. She had saved $4k, which they matched. She bought a brand new ‘03 Cavalier for $12k out the door, and had the remaining $4k paid off before she graduated high school.

I had a 1990 Hardbody just like that one, (std cab, short bed, 4x2, 5spd, steelies with the chome rings,) in the charcoal color - my paint did the same thing. Clear coat all peeled off. But it was a wonderful little truck - still miss it.
