!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It looks like Ontario college students be getting back to classes on Tuesday. I’m not really happy, but I don’t really have a choice. At this point, a semester of struggle in the high 60s is better than selling all my things and flying back to BC. I have no idea how they’ll cram 4 weeks of content into 8 weeks of classes, but I’ve come too far to give up now.

I am having a hell of a time finding out what the profs were even striking about. none of the news articles say much.

If it is about adjuncts, fuck adjuncts. 80% of the adjuncts I have had were trash. If I wanted the book read to me, I would take a remedial English course.

Sorry about this dude. As someone coming up on my last semester, I can imagine how much this must suck for you.

The good professors will cut through all the BS and just lay the important stuff on you. The bad ones will be running around like chickens with their heads cut off. Best to enjoy that show.

I predict you’ll be fine. They won’t want to take it out on the students. Slack will be cut.

I think one part was the FT : Contract staff.

3 years into an engineering degree. Honestly, profs are useless. I just have to teach everything to myself anyways. What was the strike over?

It was mainly about full-time vs. part-time staff and academic freedom. The most unfortunate part is that so many of my online resources are locked, so there isn’t much I can do.

That’s what I’m hoping is the case.

The strike was primarily over academic freedom and full time to part-time staff ratio.

You’re actually making their point. The problem is most universities have been hiring tons of adjunct professors, instead of full time professors. In saves them tons of money to piss away on fancy buildings with rich peoples’ names on them. As you experienced, it reduces the quality of education tremendously.

I also think there is some big thing about universities underpaying adjuncts at a lot of schools. For some reason they don’t just quit.

Adjunct professors get paid chicken feed. It’s hard for them to just quit. If you want to be a full time professor somewhere, you kind of have no choice but to stick it out and try to build your profile/resume/research/whatever the heck they’re doing.

This is very much true. The other reason they rejected the vote (as my teacher for work practices said this morning), is because there was stuff in there that in 4 years time, would’ve made full-time profs a rarity. As it stands, OPSEU is one of the few unions big enough to have pulled this off anyway, lots of the other unions were too small to fight this idea of making more part-time and less full-time.

As someone who is still in the first semester in automotive, I would’ve preferred if they canceled the semester and restarted in January, I know for sure my Engines lab time will be cut short, as will several other class assignments/tests/etc.

I will guarantee this though, Kathleen Wynne ain’t winning the upcoming election after having all this crap happen.

And yes, typing this while on campus btw. :P
