Kinja'd!!!

Well well well, if it isn’t the humorless germans literally offering bulletproofing in the Q5's options catalogue.

Oh they must be so proud.

I wrote an article about bulletproofing here in Mexico and it seems like those Germans had to prove me wrong, god dammit!

“But more lurks within the surface of these vehicles because many of these come with a feature that is not listed in the options catalog: bullet-proofing.”

Well, I was clearly wrong; you can get bulletproofing (And bulletproof electric windows) in the Q5 catalogue.

Please wait as I dig a hole to the centre of the earth....

I have contact with people who buy armored cars and they all say after a couple years the cars need a complete refurbish due to the glass getting bubbling and panels in the interior rattling uncontrollably. They MUCH prefer the factory armored choices such as the Grand Cherokee, GLS and I guess this Q5.

No bulletproofing would wear out in two years, I know that the kevlar is only certified for five but the windows only bubble if its is horribly made.

Yes, the factory armored cars are better, but they have a key issue and that is that the bulletproof grand cherokee is 1.7m pesos. Its not even the summit version! its the cheap limited trim! If I was to buy an armored cherokee I’d go with a company with a lot of experience and they’d be able to armor the Summit version to the same specs for about a hundred grand less!

Another problem (which you might not face in a fancy place like San Pedro Garza Garcia) is that the Q5 and the GLS stick out like sore thumbs here in Mexico City! Most factory bulletproof cars are the more expensive and luxurious models that would defeat their own purpose (being safe is not standing out). I remember that VW used to armor the Bora and it was a great car because it was unassuming

I wouldn’t trust a Q5 with my life. They have a tendancy to lose timing chain tensioners, and thus blowing the engine. It’s only bulletproof for a short time. If you’re stranded, it would probably only stop bullets for 45 seconds or less.

I hear its a common issue with VWAG motors (because they use plastic guiders?) But as Esteve said, most these people keep their cars for two or three years at most, even then they do servicing at the dealer mostly.

But it is one of the reasons they prefer the big, understressed hemi v8!

Does this affect the 3.2 models?

I only know about the 2.0L Turbo, not sure about the 3.2L.

Bora Security. I was so confused at first why they would sell that, all makes sense now.

Yeah, it was a great car! I wish they still sold a bulletproof variant of the Jetta. But not with the 5 cyl motor...
