My wife went out front, and discovered that while we were sleeping, a kid who lives around the corner fell asleep at the wheel, hopped a curb, and hit our car.

The kid has insurance, and his grandma was practically crying. But it still sucks.

What do you think of the structural damage? Repairable?

FUUUUCK!

That sucks. Also, I’ve been that kid. When I was 17, I wanted to see how fast I could back my moms Chrysler Pacifica out of the driveway and reverse t-boned our neighbours new Murano.

Crushed that thing to death. The icing on the cake was that the neighbour who’s car I hit is partially deaf, so I had to knock on their door (loudly) and tell them what I had done.

Either he was going pretty damn fast, or the Infiniti is made of paper mache.

Dayum. Did the cops administer a sobriety test on the kid? Sorry about your Infiniti.

cars today are made to be practically totaled when that happens. its safer for the passengers (if not for their wallets!) Since it was on the rear side I wouldn’t worry much (unless you tow often) and I’d really worry about the exhaust system and how that is going to be repaired. EDIT: do get a new beam!

Some dick in a tahoe hit my friend’s Range Rover in the back at about 30km/h and it was fixed over the summer, he worried the most about the exhaust because it looked like a shoddy fix! he did get the dealership to put in a new exhaust system. To be honest I don’t think there’s enough damage on either car to worry about structural integrity.

Poor kid, he was probably drunk or texting. I don’t see skid marks so I don’t think he actually slowed down before the crash, because of the relatively light damage (no blood on airbag either) and no skid marks i’d say he was texting as he drove.

Welcome to the club. The same thing happened to us last month with a neighbor kid I’ve warched grow up.

And this is why I need to find a place with a garage. GPS tends to route people down my street (including semis) and as a result they use it as an expressway when they should be sticking to the main roads. I stepped out of the house to go to work one morning and found pieces of a wrecked SLK on other side if my car. And last month we had another high-speed collision right at the corner where I live, with bodies flying out of vehicles.

A few years back there was some talk of blocking off many methods of entrance to my neighborhood, and at the time I was against it. But considering all of the accidents and miscellaneous safety hazards, I’ve changed my mind and want it done ASAP.

Oh, I don’t think it will be considered structural. It was a glancing blow, probably a pretty easy fix. No new car for you....

You might make sure to check the passenger side rear rim as I bet that wheel was driven pretty firmly into the curb. If the rim was tweaked, make sure they check the rear alignment as then chances are something got bent in the rear suspension.

While the structural damage looks repairable, it does look like it’ll be off the road for a while depending on how fast the garage can assess the work, get it okayed by your insurance, get the parts and get to work.

Everytime I’d see the guy after this I’d call him Buzz Lightyear, ‘oy Buzz Lightyear, to the Infiniti and beyond, Ay, ya prick’.

At least non of your family weren’t hurt.

Someone hit Piglet in the last few days, fingers crossed it’s just paint transfer. It doesn’t look like it’s the plastic below the paint as I know the plastic is black under the paint and the very large scuff is white.

Looks fixable from the pictures, though it’ll take some time for sure, not just a “bolt on a new part” sort of deal.

And yeah... “sleeping” - must be a heavy “sleeper” to doze off and jerk the wheel that far... I might believe it if he hit square-on, but that angle off the road looks like drunken overcorrection.

I’ve been rear-ended way worse than that. Almost pushed the rear structure into the wheels.

They fixed it up and I never had any issues. Granted, it was a minivan that I didn’t care that much about, but I drove it for 2-3 more years until the interior fell apart, as minivans are wont to do. No issues with the repairs though.

Five bucks the “falling asleep at the wheel” was fiddling with their phone... that sucks. Even with the quarter panel I doubt it would be a total - probably $16,000ish to repair but it’s gotta be worth at least $25,000.

No, in our case just a 16 year old who looked down to buckle his belt while accelerating because he didn’t pay attention to the fact that my wife was parked in front of her.

Having seen some things in my day, I have two rules of thumb when it comes to accidents not caused by gross negligence:

1. Shit happens

2. If no one got badly hurt, it’s a win.
