Are they any good? looking at smaller cars and considering what options are out there. I like the Volt, but also like the recent gen Imprezza.

I always run winter tires so I don’t know how much value I give AWD vs the AWD milage penalty.

What are you using them for? For 100-150 lbs load they are totally fine.

Yep, had these on my cars for many years. On my Accord I drove flat out on western highways with a loaded roof box full of skis, no worries

Go with one of the two big brands if you need the best and can afford it, otherwise there are some good budget brands like Malone that make good stuff.

Our Forester has had Yakima racks since day 1- I have no problem putting stuff up there.

We took a Ford Fusion in on trade that had the racks and they dented/severely scratched the mounting points. Possibly improperly installed but I am wary of them.

I’ve got 3 yakima bars on my roof

And there is about 150 lbs up there of pretty dynamic weight that hasn’t showed any signs of failure.

I like Yakima because I can buy the bars at the hardware store or metal supplier.

The “clasps” that mount to the car... are they covered plastic or are they painted metal?

Glass fiber reinforced plastic with metal tension plates.

I’ve been considering them, as the cargo capacity on my car is anti-bigly.

I say go for it, surprisingly useful and pretty tough. I was using a thule one meant for the forester on the VW for years. It wasn’t even close to the right fit but it clamped strong and took abuse like a champ. Come to think of it...I still have that rack.

Well and so you can use the term “bow lines” on a car... Which is pretty great on its own
