Apparently Costco Thinks Minivans Need H-Rated Tires

So wife orders up some Michelin Latitude Tours for the van to replace the original Michelins, and Costco guy tells her that he can’t put those tires on the van. Won’t really tell her why. So anyways, I have to go back with her to get this sorted out, since it could only be explained to me for some reason (one guess why, as she has a Master’s in Mech Eng). At which point they explain it needs H-rated tires, and those are only T’s. Never mind the fact that it shipped from the factory with T-rated Michelins. Wife then explains to the room she has no plans to take the van over 115MPH, let alone above 130MPH, even if either of those didn’t defy the laws of physics. It was awesome.

I hate tire shops now, they are so risk averse. Big-o wouldn’t put H rated tires on my non-turbo Impreza, that had to be z or W rated because that 175hp is going to propel me to 149 mph.

I’m not going to lie, in a year and a half of selling tires I never had any concern about the speed rating unless the customer stated they wanted a specific one.

I’ve been having similar issues with America’s tire. They are extremely hesitant to do any work if your tires are under 4/32" tread.

That’s not an unreasonable assumption for a motorcycle tire shop to make.

Don’t think my next set of tires will have the same issues... I keep hearing stories about Costco. I did go there for my CRV but they had the Michelins I wanted and they had no problem with my request, the dealer prices were ridiculous.

Reminds me of how my local mechanic wouldn’t  pass my NA for inspection because the summer tires I have on it have a shorter sidewall than stock. Doesn’t matter that the load rating and speed rating are higher than the factory specs.

Wow. I’m amazed the tire tech is still among the living. I would not have faulted your wife for Vader-ing him and then laying waste to the rest of the shop as a warning to sexist tire shops everywhere

Edit: I don’t mind be condescended to, and I don’t mind morons, but I can’t stand condescending morons

think they’re just joking about “175hp is going to propel me to 149 mph” because 175hp on a bike would *definitely* get your buns over 149

Its the manufacturers who are afraid of lawsuits pushing for OEM speed and load rated tires.

There have been several suits over wrongly installed speed or load ranged tires that may or may not have been leading causes in crashes, so they try to steer retailers into selling tires which are as good or better than what the car was designed and left the factory with.

Same thing goes with tire repairs. A lot of shops won’t do the old rope style plugs anymore, and recommend removing the tire and installing a plug patch from the inside out.

Because lawsuits.

You gotta remember, the Ody has VTEC, and the Sienna is a swagger wagon. I can totally see why they want to use hi-speed tires :p

I’ve heard of some people getting around this by taking the wheels off the car and bringing them to the store.

It’s simply the fact that they don’t want to get sued, and they probably could get sued if something bad happens to the tires even when driven at legal speeds.

It’s a pain, but I’ve resorted to Tirebuyer.com and Tirerack.com to get the tires I want and then pay the dealer or a local shop to mount and balance them. Otherwise they try to push whatever overstock 3 year old crap they have on special even when you tell them you want performance/speed rating/treadwear. The internet reviews have never steered me to a bad tire choice, but plenty of tire shops have... ymmv.

Congrats for sticking to your convictions and getting what you want, especially since it’s your money.

I expect that kind of garbage from Big O though, Costco used to be an ok place to buy tires. But yeah, having driven a buddy’s 2013 Forester for a couple of weeks, no way that thing is good for more than 120MPH.

The dumb part was that she had already bought them online, and they were one of the recommended options when you entered in the vehicle info. Dude was just trying for a hard upsell.

I am also surprised by this. However we were waiting the second time in line she did FB message a very very senior Costco exec who’s kid was freinds with our kid back in Washington State. So the Vadering is probably coming, just not today.

Yep, tirerack is the way to go now it appears. Ha, yeah I had no doubt that she was getting the tires she wanted, and that was that. They did have $70 off and penny install this weekend, so she cancelled the order and rebought the tires she wanted for $140 less. Which was parlayed into some amazing fajitas and tacos at a local hole in the wall.

Totally, all the enthusiasts who can’t afford Civics just buy 4 year old FCA minivans for their performance hit.

I agree it’s probably for liability reasons, but these are decent Michelins, not some garbage Chinese no name tires.

Seems hit and miss, we do have the world’s crappiest Costco, so that probably is a contributing factor. It seems like all the former Price Club locations are awful.

Ha no, then they would be her tires. They need to pay, not her... She did get $140 extra off since they forgot to call her when the tires came in, and they had a special on this weekend.

Ours is relatively new, the shopping center didn’t exist back then so it’s all new construction. They seem ok there, but for an enthusiast car I go to the real wheel shop that can do new exotics.
