Electric space heater plugged into a squid style surge strip. I don’t even want to know how long it was like that

First time I stayed at my parent’s new house, the space heater in my room did this:

Needless to say, there was some checking done on the wiring...

I lived in a 120 year old farm house that had probably 50 year old electrical. More than once near fires wear started because the only heat in the house was 3 space heaters.

That is exactly why I do not leave space heaters plugged in and they aren’t turned on unless I have direct line of sight to them. They are awesome but my god are they hazardous.

Oppo is atop a list related to my potential demise, but it’s not so much a will as it is a list of suspects

Our fire inspector always flags power strips. Doesn’t want them used at all. Apparently they cause A LOT of fires. The local bakery by my parents just burned to the ground due to a power strip by the cash register. They’re bad news.

Personally, I only use them for the Christmas tree which is all LED, draws little current, and gets turned off when we’re not around.

Yeah, this place is probably late 1800s, and some of the wiring dates back to at least the 50s.

Yup that’ll do it. I was scared when I bought my house because it still has some scary 50s electrical. The houses in the neighborhood hood were all built around 1915, but everything has been updated, the old stuff just hasn’t been removed. So it’s not used for anything just there looking sketchy as frig.

It can happen surprisingly quickly. I’ve had a new extension cord go to looking like that in less than a day with a 1000W PAR64 lamp plugged into it that was arcing each time it was switched on.

I can understand the concern, but sometimes they are really handy. For example, my computer, three monitors, speakers and low-power backup server are plugged into one. The whole setup likely doesn’t draw more than a few hundred watts max, but would otherwise require 3 outlets within close proximity.

We’ve owned it since around 1960. My grandfather updated some of the outlets and wiring, but not all of it

The issue is shitty power strips, which are all too common. How much current does a POS system draw? Not much, but it burned down that bakery. Get a quality strip and you’re fine.

Incidentally, when I built my new office I put in double outlets everywhere. Only cost me $10 extra per outlet. No power strips required, fire marshal happy.

Also, make sure the circuit protection (circuit breaker or fuse) is sized appropriately for the wire gauge being used. Wiring 14 gauge can only handle 15 amps, 20A of 12, and 30A for 10. Circuit protection is designed to protect the wiring (as that’s where most fires start). In a case where the plug or wires are melting and burning and the circuit doesn’t open, the wrong protection size is in place.....regardless of the powerstip. It isn’t always easy to tell what is on what circuit so sometimes you just have to trace and figure it out, I know my house was built in 1885. Tripping a circuit or blowing a fuse is always more preferable than burning your house down.
