I’m driving 650 miles to Indiana see my Dad and Stepmom. I’m going to load the road bike up on the roof in anticipation of 2 semi-warm days of biking (which is pretty unusual for Indy this time of year).

The oil, she is changed. The car, she is washed. The winter tires, they are on.

Enjoy the Pence-country!

We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here, but I might ride to Valle because we do get a break #Globalism

Flying up to Boston on Tuesday. A little far for the car. Currently have the dog stuffed in her carrier to get her used to the idea of being in there for a bit.

I’m just going about 15 miles up the road to my grandparents for turkey day. It’ll be awesome. My aunt makes a big meal and she’s a wonderful cook. I’m stoked. I’ll be taking my 5 year old daughter with me and she’ll be super stoked too. Eating isn’t a big deal for her but she loves her great grandparents and she’ll get to play with the dogs.

Good times!

Have fun in Indiana. I’m in Ohio.

Be safe motoring! You have a very cool Golf!

Driving 500ish miles to meet my Mom and Grandma at my Grandma at my Grandma’s brother’s house in Atlanta on Tuesday, then driving 400 miles back to Greensboro NC on Friday, and then 200 back to Wilmington on Monday..

Thanks, it’s a good little road trip car. The miles should fly by.

The holidays are fun with kids. My son is 13 so he’s in that too-school-for-school mode. But he let’s his guard down now and then and has fun.

I’ll wave as I cross the Ohio flatlands!

Oh yea, that’s a bit of long haul for a holiday drive. Have fun with the dog. Ours is staying with friends. I can’t take a 95lb lab in the GTI with my family.

I’m driving from Seattle to Portland with the parents to visit some relatives. We’re taking their 2014 Forester, which is joyless to drive, but I don’t mind riding in the back seat.

I’m leaving Monday to visit my mom and stepdad in the south end of the state. We’re going to have Thanksgiving dinner Tuesday night. Then I’m driving back and will spend Thanksgiving day with my partner and his parents. Unfortunately my partner works retail, so he is stuck working every day (though only 10-2 on Thanksgiving day). I wish he was able to come with me to my parents.

I say we vote to close all retail establishments on Thanksgiving!

I grew up with divorced parents, so I know the holiday-jog myself. Lots of driving back and forth.

Have a good one!

You need a Forester XT with a tune. :) But I hear you, my Mom has a base Outback. Boring, but reliable car.

I think I’d throw myself out the window if I had to take a trip with some of my relatives. Hope yours goes well.

Thanks! I agree about closing on Thanksgiving, but this 10 am to 2 PM shift is better than in years past because he doesn’t have to open again until 6am Friday. Other years he’s had to open at 8 or 10 pm and work into the morning.

It’s just my parents so I’ll be fine for a few hours. I’m a better driver than my dad, but I’m mature enough to realize it’s not worth voicing my criticism anymore. If he gets into an accident, he can sort it out with the insurance companies.

My brother, much like you, carries his bike on the roof of his VW (CC) when he takes a road trip. For his wedding weekend back in September, he brought his bike from Nashville to Evansville, Ind.

About ten minutes down the road to my aunt and uncle’s place. I’m in Texas and all of my family is in California so I’ll be staying local for Thanksgiving. I’m flying home for Christmas and New Year’s.

There’s a certain beauty to ditching the car and flying. My son and wife are flying out to Indy a few days after I drive out so he doesn’t miss any school. While I like driving the GTI, eleven hours in the car is a long day.

Have a good Texas Turkey Day!

Well that will be fantastic! Wife and I did 3 walking tours with the company “walksofitaly.com”. They were great. We did the night tour of the Colosseum, the Vatican, and the Crypts and Catacombs tour. They were all amazing, but might be tough with a little one. Great tour company though. So much history in Rome, you just sort of walk around in a daze after the tour.

Yea, my Dad’s still a good driver, but my Mom scares the crap out of me now. She’s in her 70’s and age seems to be catching up with her fast. Sucks to see your parents start the decline from which you know there is no recovery. Sigh.

Yeah definitely. I love to drive but San Antonio to Los Angeles is pretty far. I’m also in the military so I’d have to take two extra days of leave just to account for travel time. I’ll take the 3 hour flight in this scenario.

Have to drive about 7 hours by myself on thanksgiving day to pick up the wife and infant.

The MINI should be checked in to a body shop by then and I should have a free rental. I’m thinking of seeing if I can pay a little extra to upgrade to something nice for my trip and leave the GTI Home.

Or I could take the 1985 XJ6. What say ye?

Rental. It’s always interesting to drive something different, even it’s to realize you hate the thing six ways to Sunday. Or you come out of it pleasantly surprised.

For that long of a drive it’s also nice to know you’ll be in a dead-reliable (though boring,) vehicle. And sometimes when you get to the counter you get a free upgrade, or offered an upgrade for a lot less than what the prices are on their website.
