Edit: Would it be possible to just remove the tie rod end from the hub and spin the nut and tie rod off together? The lock nut doesn’t have a problem spinning with the tie rod, so could I just pop it out of the hub and take them both off at the same time?

Without a lift or dislocating one of your shoulders?

I’ve tried using a cheater pipe. But there’s no room without angling the wrench. But since then the round part of the tie rod causes the wrench to slip off.

Overall it just seems like there’s no natural way to put reasonable force on both wrenches. You get in a good position on one and your other arm’s in some awkward ass position and can’t do shit.

I’m really starting to hate this car.

I don’t have a torch and I live in an apartment so I don’t think I’d be allowed to store gas here :(

But none of my friends have a strength that can parallel mine.

I’ll try that, but I have a feeling it still won’t work, because I think this car just hates me at this point.

An electric powered heat gun?

Idk it that’d get it hot enough. Plus there’s no outdoor electrical sockets nearby.

Do you need to preserve the tie rod?

Kinja'd!!!

Make the round part go away. Or cut it off and put a deep socket and breaker bar over the nut.

How good a floor jack do you have?

I’ve lowered the car down onto wrenches/stuck bolts before. But you can’t just dump the chassis, you have to be careful.

Instead I think I’ll just take it to the shop I took the Integra to and then they’ll just steal it. The insurance company won’t know what kind of shape it’s in!

This is good, but I’m not sure I’d be able to cut it with a hacksaw. I think I’ll save that for a nuclear option.

No power outlets nearby, but I’m sure there’s a corded version. I don’t really wanna spend a lot of money of tools for this POS though.

The other advantage to the grinder is it’ll apply heat.

The 220V versions that we have here are quite powerful but I have never tried any 110V model. Penetration lube and two hammers against the pipe part?

Technically, yes, you could do it with a Sawzall, plasma cutter, the Jaws of Life, etc., but then you still have to remove it from the ends in a clean way.

Think of it not as spending money for tools for the POS, but rather for tools to allow you to do more things in the future. For just a hobbyist, the cheaper store-brand tools (not the garbage harbour freight junk) will get the job done and frequently end up costing less than paying someone else to do the job.

True but I don’t think I’ll be doing too many jobs that require cutting anything.

Already used PB blaster. The pipe doesn’t work at all, because it won’t fit without angling the wrench then the wrench just slides off.

Lots of good ideas already. You should try those before this next suggestion: removing the inner rod from the rack.

I was thinking about hammering that tubular part of the tie rod with opposing hammers. They could deform it enough for the lube to slip in.

You’d be surprised. Once you discover that you could either piss around and get mad at something for a few hours and not accomplish anything or else cut it off in five minutes and be done with it, it starts getting used more and more often.

Move the wrench pointed downwards until it is closer to paralell with the one to the left. Place a bar between the two angled so when you pull up on it a lever is created with one as the fulcrum. You’ll be effectively pushing and pulling at once. Alternatively, position a wrench to hit something while turning the other.

Similarly, if the wrench needs to go “up” I have used the floor jack to push up on the wrench.

I once lifted the front of the crown vic off the jackstands through a 16" breaker bar using this method. That caliper bracket bolt sure was tight...

I would use a really big pipe wrench on the round part and a crowfoot wrench attachment on a 18-24” ratchet on the nut. That should get you enough leverage to break it free.

Mapp gas torch at the nut for a short time and it should break loose relatively easy.

If that doesn’t work, if you have a pneumatic hammer, use a blunt tip and smack the nut side in the direction to loosen the nut, that should do the trick.

11/18/2017 at 16:33, STARS: 1

I’m think so. I just got a neighbor to help me with it and doing one wrench each we couldn’t get it. So I think it needs more leverage.

No dice. There’s not enough room for the further wrench to come from the left and the CV axle blocks the front one from coming to the right :(

Think I’m just gonna have to get a torch and try heat.

I think you need to check whether there is a reverse thread on that tie rod. I seem to recall that there is. if so, you are tightening that nut, not loosening it.

But, to answer your question yes assuming you can get the ball joint out of the knuckle, you can remove unthread the joint off of the tie rod end. However, every honda hub I have worked on has been a SOB to get the ball joint out of the hub, even if you have the honda tool.

Yeah sometimes those things get really stuck. Especially with corrosion. At this point if you don’t need to go anywhere I would soak it with penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. Then use a handheld butane torch on it in the AM and then get both of you on it. It’s hard to tell from the image, but it does look like there might be room to get more leverage. A crowfoot plus a long ratchet tends to work better than a wrench and cheater.

Just leave the outer tie rod bolted to the spindle and you only have to use one wrench at a time
