Kinja'd!!!

Watched the Williams documentary on a flight today. Watch it. It is astonishgly open and honest. The details it goes into the Williams family, the racing, Frank’s accident and his relationship with his family and friends. It is remarkable.

The first five minutes are appalingly boring, but after that it’s ok - just. The entire documentation is a dog’s breakfast with nothing being in chronological order and everything quite shallow. And it suffers from the blight that plagues many BBC documentations: it’s all about people, nothing about cars or - god help us! - actual technology (looking at you “The Tube”).

Looking forward to watching it Sunday. Even more so now after seeing you use the word “remarkable”.

Most Motorsports documentaries are dry, over focused on guitar riffs and quick cuts of cars. This is about the family. The team is part of the family, but how the life of the family, Frank’s paralysis, and the team are all intertwined. Very well done.

Wow, what I appreciated is what you disliked. There are plent of thin high level looks at F-1 tech out there. Rarely are we present with honest looks at the people behind the sport. Frank Williams is an icon, but they didn’t treat him as a saint or brush by the fact that he was flawed.

I saw it on a trip too and thought it was good. I especially liked the insights about the driver feuds and and the influence of Patrick Head.

The movie is not a technical treatise, it is the 4 decades story about the man, his family, and his team.

Another view of the story the book below. I read it about 10 years ago.

Thought it was great as well, hits really hard at certain points. Didn’t realize Frank was such a stoic guy.
