A coupe originally meant it was small space or less space. So, if it has less space than the original version it is a coupe.
Also, a sedan just meant it was enclosed.
The Datsun 510 is a good example of how these terms were used correctly and clearly. There was a 4 door sedan, 2 door sedan, and coupe.
