Now how long until after they make it a full-on Coupe/Rimac Killer?

I don’t like Tesla doing this; they are basically trying real hard to convince investors.

Reporter: “Racism!”, “Slow production!”, “Sexual misconduct of board member”

Elon: “Look! A supercar!”

To be honest, I would be surprised if the Reporter and Board member being accused are all Elon Musk.

At the rate at which he’s doing things, he might as well be 5 people at least.

According to Tesla’s “numbers” it’s already a Rimac killer.

Therein lies the problem with Elon. For as good a businessman that he is, he’s always overselling himself and that is no way to run a business!

If he wants to run Tesla he needs to show people that it is a reasonable brand and not one that gorges on pre-order money just to never actually deliver a product on time or with the promised specs.

What i’m saying is that Musk needs to stop Tesla from becoming Electronic Arts.

Elon did say its the “base model”. Don’t think the upgrade has to be a coupe though, if the strength is in the floor it can be a targa too. Ala ZR1, Mclarens, etc.

If the structure is already designed to be stiff enough as a targa, I don’t see any reason to ever release a non-targa coupe. Usually when you have both, it’s because the structure is easier to design as a coupe and then a couple years in, you beef up the structure and make a targa/convertible (just my observation/opinion).

With that said, from specs alone I think it’s already a Rimac killer. I’m sure the current prototype needs more work before it’ll be on a track.

My question is do they have a new battery tech? I though the Model 3 wasn’t getting the 100kwh pack because it wouldn’t fit, but now we have a 200kwh pack that fits in the roadster. Sounds like a redesigned battery pack at the least, and some new batteries at the most.

Yep. Rimac wouldn’t hold a candle to this new roadster.

the Rimac nearly was a killer - are you saying Tesla will finish off Hammond for good?

If I were Musk, I’d focus on the truck. If it’s as good as he says it is I’m sure he’d make way more money on that than a flavor of the month supercar.

Well no, since he’ll never get to drive it, what with the clarkson/musk drama

By the sounds of it, the battery pack is pretty thick. https://electrek.co/2017/11/17/new-tesla-roadster-halo/

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Roadster being announced now is partially to get through Model 3 production hell.

They know how to make low-volume high-end cars with quirks that high-end buyers are willing to accept, the customers for those cars have large amounts of disposable income that they can slap down to reserve a car, and $250,000 for a Roadster Founders Edition is ridiculously cheap compared to a Chiron.

And, consider that they’ve got 1000 Founders reservations available - so that’s $250,000,000 in the bank - not chump change - in addition to a bunch of $50,000 reservations for the standard Roadster.

Assuming that this is their plan and it works, Model 3 production would eventually stabilize and become profitable (along with semi production), and then they can make the Roadster (which actually doesn’t look very gimmicky, it’s just lots of battery and motor, something that they’re demonstrably good at).

But low volume high end cars aren’t good business. That’s why Lambo, Ferrari, and Bugatti are owned by VAG and FCA and doing fine, while Lotus struggles to stay afloat. The model 3 will sell well for a while, but once GM and the Japanese companies start making EVs that’ll compete with it for likely less costs. No minimalist interior will save them from that.

They’ll also loose the Model S and X sales once the Germans start making large and midsize SUVs and sedans (EVs).

From the beginning my whole theory is that Musk is just trying to milk the production cars while he builds up their battery building infrastructure. Then make most of his business selling batteries to other companies. Maybe they’ll still make the roadster and an even more luxurious Model S, but they’d be more of a boutique manufacturer at that point.

Like Bob Lutz said in the article someone recently posted. They don’t do anything any other manufacture couldn’t. They’re just rolling it out a step ahead of everyone else because they can’t afford not to.

Wondering if Porsche’s electric price will pop up due to this.
