I think honestly GM should give Holden R&D money since obviously they do jack shit with it and let them design an excellent, honest-to-god Aussie car and then manufacture it in Canada or Mexico and ship it worldwide as a Holden (including selling it in the U.S. as, well, a Holden). Solves the problem of both Aussie manufacturing costs as well as the floundering identity of Holden itself.

Whomever winds up with whatever badge should keep in mind where they’re marketed, and to a certain extent where they’re built. A guy my age has fond memories of the cars that bore the Opel badge, but also recalls that they were sold at Buick dealerships.

I saw a Toyota Prado or something cop car today.

In 10 years, the idea of Commodore cops and taxis will be dead.

GM should of sold Holden along with Vauxhall and Opel to PSA.

Granted they won’t want to do PSA any favours but keeping Holden and having to R&D cars for the RHD market and then build them is a greatly added cost they could do without.

Does GM still sell cars in RHD markets (other than Australia/NZ) in any significant numbers?

I like the top comment in that article: “May be it is time to finally put Cecil to rest.” I’m speculating we’ll say this about GM as a whole in a number of years, after a new recession has hit.

Holden as we know it was dead from the moment that GM sold Opel and Vauxhall. The Equinox and Acadia won’t save it nor will the Colorado/Trailblazer. It won’t be long before we see badge engineered SAIC product in the Holden lot.

Even Ford Oz is in strife since they are so reliant on the Ranger and all they’ve got in the game is the forthcoming Edge which they’ve had to call Endura...which is also a sports nutrition brand.

This may have been a great idea. I mean look how much better Ford is doing now that Germany does most of its R&D, at least for cars.

Chevrolet sold off their SA plant, but they will continue to sell cars in the country.
