Kinja'd!!!

A week ago, I posted a Politico story with some interviews in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and some oppos made some great conversation about it. This week, a group of business and civic leaders in Johnstown replied, and here is the piece they wrote:

Johnstown is the reason I didn’t go to Pitt. Main campus or gtfo.

Also this is like every pa city I’ve been to outside of Pittsburgh or philly. Oil city? Punxsutawney? (Shudder)

Guess I’m just a suburb boy at heart.

I wasn’t aware of this story until now.

From reading the original article, it felt like the focus was very much on the cognitive dissonance of Trump supporters and their reasons for supporting him. That’s what I got from the repeated anecdotes about people saying why they supported Trump, then when presented with the reality of him not actually delivering on his promises that they liked, them supporting him anyway and blaming those failures to deliver on anyone other than Trump.

And also that they hate the NFL protests and at least a couple of them are racist fucks. So there’s that.

But the response is all like, “you made our city look worse than it is, we’re doing good things here to improve the economy.”

Seems like they missed the point.

Completely unrelated to the story, I almost skid off the top of a coal mine in Johnstown.

This. I read the original article when it came out, and I thought much the same. I never read it as a story about Johnstown as a whole.

You’d think that Johnstown residents would be a little more skeptical of the rich and powerful.

My roots are in Somerset and my nostalgia is fading fast.

I think it’s fair for the civic leaders to make a stand and say that we are broader than that sampling represents, but I agree with you that smashing Johnstown was not the point.

Very good response. I don’t think that the individuals in the story were unfairly portrayed, but overall, the town probably was.

The town probably has more of those folks than they care to have. I’ve mentioned it here already, but my roots are in Somerset, which is only 25 or 30 miles from Johnstown. I spent summers in Somerset as a youth and my nostalgia for the place is fading fast.

Every town probably does...

Times change, and hopefully people do to.
