Frankly I should have ranked the 25m rapid fire in first or second because it’s got the aesthetics of the 10m while still being actually useful as a handgun.

Wheeled artillery pieces have less than half the payload capacity and range of manual gunnery.

Tracked pieces can get wrecked and banged on all day, specifically why NK would get savaged in a conventional fight.

his is a .357 mag. Its like a blend of shooting a pistol and rifle. Just a fun target gun.

The last deaths from naval gunfire were 8 years ago, if you believe Wikipedia . Though admittedly that will only have been with toy guns, since it was corvettes vs gunboats. I imagine Gulf War I was the last time someone was shot up by anything bigger than a 5.5".

It’s not the Navy’s fault the US only picks fights with people inland nowadays :-).

All I know is that some guy named Wheelerguy made an underexplained list that said a 1911 was worse than getting hit by a diesel Volkswagen, and I disagree.

The 1911 is a single-stack anachronism, like a Lada Riva except the 1911 is an ancient design that’s still in production. Other guns do it better with more ammo. The only appealing thing about a 1911 is you’ll have other knuckle-draggers grunt and ook-ook-eek-eek with you as you point out the custom hammer and fancy trigger you installed on yours.

It’s mechanically quite complex, though. And the magazine is plastic. I know why it is and it’s an engineering marvel, but definitely crazy.

The 5.7x28mm rounds are about 70 cents each, too, which adds up fast.

Some day I will own a bullpup. The PS90 intrigues me, but I can’t wrap my head around buying a rifle that shoots pistol rounds. Would it be useful for anything other than expensive plinking or shooting muskrats out of my yard in the spring? I’d also like to try out a Five-seveN, but I’m not sure if it would fit my hand well enough to be able to shoot it accurately.

For the basic job, a 1911 does it just fine for most people. It’s kind of like a ‘68 Camaro. Sure, there are a lot of cars that have come since that do the job better. But it can do the job just fine if that’s your taste.

Kinja'd!!! "Eric @ opposite-lock.com" (theyrerolling)
11/17/2017 at 09:42, STARS: 0

I disagree. I don’t own a .45 yet, but it’ll definitely be a 1911. I shot a huge variety of .45s a while back and every time I ended up comparing to the 1911. They’re just right in every way and the next-best are all somehow based on the design. The magazine makes most of the difference, because most others were cumbersome to grip. For that matter, most were also awkward to operate...

I quite like my 1911, single stack SAO with a great trigger and far more accurate than I am. The biggest problem with 1911s is everyone tries to modify them and they turn into something about equal to a Hi-Point.

I have Trump Hands (palm of large hand, fingers of small hand), and being single-stack puts a 1911's trigger exactly where it needs to be for me. I have yet to encounter a Glock or Beretta whose ergonomics work as well for me, though a Springfield XD isn’t too far off.

I’m not even interested in getting one that’s pimp’ed OUT , just one that fires right, doesn’t have a sharp edge on the trigger, puts lead downwind in the right place, and doesn’t stovepipe. I don’t mind being the RIA-with-polished-ramp pleb, but a 1911 in general is the correct porridge for this Goldilocks, and feels right.

I have a bone stock Springfield M1911A1 which (IMO) needs absolutely no mods of any kind. And it’s pretty damn accurate; I’ve received a few comments on my tight groupings at the range.

it’s basically an “open-source” design at this point.  Anyone can make one, and anyone can modify the design as they see fit.

Like many things, it is form, not function. The feel of the solid metal gun, the wood grips, the legendary trigger.

The sad thing is that the Five-seveN is my favorite among light polymer-frame pistols that I’ve shot. The problem is that they’re so expensive to shoot for target practice (and expensive to purchase). FN did a great job on ergo with these guns.

I can barely shoot mine, because it requires 16GA shells that *aren’t* 2-3/4"s. 1927, designed for 16GA 2-9/16 paper hulls, so it won’t eject a star-crimped normal plastic hull. It cycles properly only with ones I’ve trimmed the crimp off of and glued a card into the end of.

I’m looking at getting into brass hulls, because that’s not really *any more* work and isn’t any more expensive if I reload batches of fifty.

Kinja'd!!! "RPM esq." (rpm3)
11/17/2017 at 11:35, STARS: 0

The appealing thing about a 1911 is that it’s comfortable in my hand, it works, and it looks like a gun, not a space-age laser blaster or a toy. I haven’t customized anything because it works just fine as is, and I don’t know any “knuckledraggers” who would care if I did. If I ever have the sort of problem that 8 .45-caliber rounds can’t solve, owning a double-stack polymer whatsit isn’t going to get me out of it anyway.
