Kinja'd!!!

Daycare is only open one damn day next week, but we still have to pay for the full week. I’m sick of this crap. Luckily I only have to write four more of these, because my wife is quitting her job soon.

Wait, they’re only open 1 day, and you pay for the full week?!?! WTS?! If they would pay me for a full week, and I only needed to go one day, that’d be alright, but it would never happen.

That’s a load of garbage. Once you’re done with them, be sure to leave a review on Google or Yelp or whatever so that others know to avoid them.

Why are they only open one day? Mine is closed Thursday-Friday, which makes sense and is fine because I’m off those days.

All daycares do that shit. They are running a service which, by law, requires a set number of employees per child. As such, they need to staff it with full time employees based on the number of kids enrolled. If the workers are going to be full time they need to get paid so you have to pay for full weeks. If you send your kid to private school it isn’t as though you don’t pay the school on the days little Timmy has a tummy ache and stays home. Grown up stuff is expensive.

And if everyone else pays same rate that’s $62,400 per year.

Your wife at home will be a struggle for a while. But it will be nice. And when they go to school she will have an opportunity to do something. But it’s tuff on one income.

They do, but honestly we’ve seen the quality of the care drop significantly within the last year. They used to do crafts, go to parks, go for walks, etc. The only thing we hear about now is what TV shows they watched.

That’s how daycare works. It’s an annualized expense, not a per day expense. She is caring for your child, ostensibly due to the fact that you and your wife are not available to do so (due to work, etc).

Does it suck? Sure. I pay for after care at my son’s public school. It’s $300 a month and it is a sliding scale based on income. I pay at the highest rate due to my income while other parents pay a fraction. Is it fair? I don’t know, but I do know that my son is well taken care of and they are providing a service which is needed so I pay what they say. He will be out of school for two weeks in December, I will be paying for the whole month. Things cost money. Child care is fucking expensive

Want to talk about pissing away money? Let’s discuss child support. My payment is based on my income. I am happy to pay it. I want to pay it. What irks me is that the money I pay is cash, and has been taxed by the state and fed and is not claimed as income by my kids mom; it’s a cash payment. In order to pay the $1000 a month I have to earn $1350. I can’t pay this money pretax with a flex spending account as you can for things like daycare. So every month I pay the government $350 in order to satisfy my child support obligations. They collect tax on the court mandated payment of support for my child. Were I married with a child I would not have to suffer that additional financial burden. Why is there no flex account for child support? The system is designed so that the money is for the support of the child, yet it in practice it is another instance of the government reaching their hand into my pocket and, in the end, making it more difficult to to do the very thing the courts have mandated I do. In short, grown up stuff is expensive.

I don’t know what “get at me” means in this instance. Your beef sounded as though it was with the fact that if young healthy people won’t be required to pay into the insurance pool, your rates will increase. You will have to pay more for insurance. Are you not willing to help the less fortunate with things like ER visits for indigent, or are you only willing to pay into a system like that if everyone else is as well?

Yep my wife staying home with our kids was probably the smartest decision we ever made with regard to them. I don’t miss the daycare games at all. For a time we were luckily able to have a family friend watch our Son. We paid her a token amount as a gratitude, and while it wasn’t nearly as much as a full daycare service would cost, it wasn’t insignificant either.

Then they moved away... and then we had another kid... and after a couple months paying for an actual service we did the math and realized my wife’s job was almost going 100% to just paying for childcare. Which realistically made absolutely no sense. So she quit her job to stay home with the kids (we’re up to three of them now). Overall now our life is so much simpler and far less stressful (especially my wife’s) and the kids are happier.

And don’t get me wrong I’m 100% not against women working. Shoot if my wife could get a job making as much or more than me, I’d happily stay home with the kids instead... I mean seriously... Get on it woman, how many hints must I drop?

When we had our first kid, I was making a lot less than I do now and my wife was relatively happy at her job. Plus the care our daughter was receiving was fantastic. It made sense.

When we had a second kid, it was gut-check time. Two kids in daycare was going to cost more than our mortgage, roughly 60% of her take home pay. I was making a bit more, and insurance for them was through my wife’s employer, so we decided it still made sense for her to stay working.

In the last year or so, we’ve seen a marked decline in the quality of care. They go to an in-home daycare, there’s only six kids there. They used to go to parks, go on walks, do crafts, play in the yard, etc. Now the only thing we hear about is what TV shows my oldest watched. We’re trying to potty train our little one, something that daycare was very helpful at making happen with the older one. This time, nothing.

At the same time, it’s been almost a decade since my wife got a raise. Her employer’s company is circling the drain. Morale there is in the toilet, so now my wife is miserable there. It’s time to cut bait and be done with all this jibba-jabba. I’m making enough more now that we’ll be OK. We’ve got another five weeks of this crap, and then it’s over.

Yeah it sounds like you will have to get a bit leaner on your household expenses, at least for a while. That sucks but I’m sure it’ll work out in the long run. For us it was probably a bit easier. But only because back then we both weren’t making very much, so we were already accustomed to living a fairly sparse lifestyle... and honestly we still kinda do.

I won’t lie, sometimes I wonder how things could have gone if she could have stuck it out with her job. She was only a couple of years into it and I know she could have probably eventually developed it into a fairly well paying career. I have no doubt we could probably be in a drastically better financial situation with two full time paychecks and no childcare, once all of the kids were school age.

But the more I think about it the more I realize it’s just money and there are so many more important things in life. Like your time, you can always make more money, but time is a finite resource, and your kids are only kids for a fairly short time.

So realistically I couldn’t be happier with how thing have gone for us ever since, we definitely aren’t rich but we make due. Our life is so much simpler than it used to be which makes it possible to spend more quality time together as a family, and that alone was worth it.

Well then don’t do it, because you’ll be one miserable SOB. Our daycare provider has been doing it for about 20 years, and is clearly done with it all. Quality of care has dropped significantly in the last 8-10 months. We considered putting them in another daycare for a few months until my wife was ready to quit, but decided that extra huge change would be more harmful to the girls than the mediocre care they’ve been getting.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
